Penn State selects Evoqua technologies

nited Utilities has invested in DynaDisc disc filtration technology from Hydro International to improve phosphates removal at its Congleton and Saddleworth wastewater treatment works in the UK and to meet Urban Wastewater Directive water quality targets. The DynaDisc units have been installed at both plants in a project to supplement secondary trickling filter beds treatment. Nomenca Ltd, a specialist mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, control and automation contractor, also installed new dosing systems and integrated the equipment with existing instrumentation systems as part of United Utilities’ AMP5 investment programme. DynaDisc comprises modular discshaped screen cassettes covered with fine woven filter media to specified pore sizes, suspended on a rotatable shaft within a drum. Key benefits include a very compact footprint, low head requirements and high suspended particle removal.

P

ittsburgh-based Evoqua Water Technologies is helping Penn State University and the State College region manage their growing clean water needs by supplying adsorption systems and coconut shell-based granular activated carbon. The Evoqua adsorption systems remove organic contaminants through 12 12-foot diameter high-pressure vessels (HP1230SYS). Evoqua will also provide approximately 360 000 pounds of its Westates AquaCarb (AC1230C) virgin coconut shell-based granular activated carbon for use in the systems. The selection of Evoqua’s adsorption and granular activated carbon is part of a US$62 million water investment at Penn State that includes a new water treatment plant and water distribution system upgrades. Installation of the Evoqua adsorption systems is scheduled to begin in January 2016. The work is expected to be completed by October 2016.

DESALINATION

Veolia delivers seawater desalination package to Total

V

eolia Water Technologies in South Africa has designed, fabricated and commissioned two new packaged water treatment

plants to supply water to the people who work and live on Total’s Ofon offshore oil rig. The Total Ofon offshore oil rig, situated 60 km south of Port Harcourt, Nigeria, recently tripled its daily output as part of its Phase 2 project. The two new packaged water treatment plants – one for desalination and the other for potable water – will supplement the existing fresh water supply for cooking, cleaning and the HVAC system on the living quarters platform.

Orpic specifies Aquatech desal system for refinery in Oman

A

quatech is to design and supply a Multiple Effect Distillation (MED) seawater desalination system for Orpic’s Sohar Refinery Improvement Project in Oman. Orpic (Oman Oil Refineries and Petroleum Industries Company) selected the MED technology for uninterrupted water supply to boilers and other site needs. The desalination facility will supply pure water to boilers, service water as well as potable water. The Aquatech scope of services includes design, equipment supply, testing and commissioning of three MED units, with accessories and post treatment systems, to produce distilled water. Aquatech is supplying the system to a Petrofac/Daelim joint venture that has the full EPC contract for the whole refinery project.

MINING

Outotec to provide tailings treatment plant for Finnish mine

O

utotec is to design and deliver a E40 million paste plant for tailings treatment at Yara Suomi Oy’s Siilinjärvi mine in Finland. The Outotec EPC delivery includes engineering, equipment supply, construction and commissioning of the paste plant as well as spare parts and services. The new plant is expected to become operational in the first half of 2017. The Siilinjärvi mine produces about one million tonnes of apatitite concentrate, which creates approximately 10 million tonnes of tailings per year. The tailings, a mixture of sand and water, are currently disposed in the tailings storage facility as conventional tailings slurry. The new high density tailings disposal system with dewatering will increase the percentage of solids in the slurry, making it possible to deposit as paste and extending the lifetime of the tailings storage facility. Reclaim water is returned to the process water circulation.
