Summary of Course Responsibility for coordinating "total care" of cancer patients is, most commonly, the responsibility of internists. They benefit, therefore, from familiarity with general principles of prevention, detection, management, and follow-up. There has been a large increase in effective medical therapies for cancer and in the early role of chemotherapy in multimodal management. The roles of "tumor markers" have expanded rapidly. Immunotherapy is waning after a period of interest. The diagnosis and treatment of distant "paraneoplastic" effects on the host is more effective than before, and the bases for such syndromes are better understood. This course is designed for those preparing for the medical oncology board examination, internists desiring a comprehensive refresher course, and oncologists desiring a rigorous update. Clinically relevant aspects of causation, growth, biology, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation from the view of the internist will be reviewed. Methods of instruction will include lectures with a prepared outline of material and slides, luncheons with the professors, case presentations and discussions, panel discussions, posters, film strips, movies, and a pre- and post-quiz. 93
