Basic requirements for active membership are: 1. Graduation from a medical school approved by the Council on Medical Education and Hospitals of the American Medical Association or a medical school of comparable standing. 2. Receipt of an M.D. degree, or its equivalent, at least 5 years before election to membership. The applicant must have been engaged in active practice or in the teaching of medicine during this 5-year period. 3. An internship of at least 1 year in a hospital approved by the Council on Medical Education and Hospitals of the American Medical Association. The 1 year of internship to be followed by not less than 3 years of a urological residency in one of the approved hospital11, 1 year of which may be served in general surgery. 4. Limitation of the applicant's practice to 100 per cent urology for not less than 2 years prior to admission. 5. The applicant's training and the evidence he submits of his work must cover all phases of urology. 6. Active membership in the Section of the American Urological Association within whose jurisdiction the applicant resides, and endorsement by the Section. 7. Unconditional certification by American Board of Urology, Inc., or certification in urology by the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada. Those applicants not certified by one or the other of these boards are required to submit 10 records of major urological cases which have been under the applicant's supervision. Physicians in permanent governmental service who can fulfill all requirements for admission except active membership in a Section may apply for membership in the American Urological Association under the classification of members-at-large. PROGRAM OF 1971 MEETING OF AMERICAN UROLOGICAL ASSOCIATION The annual convention of the American Urological Association will be held at the Palmer House, Chicago, Illinois, May Hi-21, 1971. Those who wish to apply for a place on the program should send, in duplicate, to Dr. Wyland F. Leadbetter, secretary of the AUA, 1 Hawthorne Place, Boston, Massachusetts 02114, a title of the presentation and an abstract of the paper of 50 words or less. This abstract will be printed in the program if the title is accepted by the Program Committee. Only those titles that are submitted with abstracts will-be considered by the Program Committee. Besides the customary 50-word abstract, it is requested that each applicant submit an extensive explanation of his presentation for use by the Program Committee in evaluating titles. If more than one person has participated in the work, please state by whom the paper will be read at the meeting. Please give the name and address of the person to whom communications should be sent regarding the presentation. Applications for a place on the program must be submitted to Dr. Leadbetter on or before December 10, 1970. It is understood that any papers accepted for presentation at the Chicago meeting have not and will not be submitted for consideration by any other program committee. ANNUAL HISTORY OF UROLOGY FORUM May 17, 1971 (in conjunction with meeting of American Urological Association in Chicago, May 16-20). Those who wish to present a paper should submit title and a 50-word abstract on or before December 10 to Dr. Ralph R. Landes, 1040 Main Street, Danville, Virginia 24541. 1971 PRIZE ESSAY CONTEST The American Urological Association offers an annual award of $1,500 for essays on the result of some clinical or laboratory research in urology (first prize of $250 for clinical research, first prize of $250 for laboratory research; second prize of $150 for clinical research, second prize of $150 for laboratory research; third prize of $100 for clinical research, third prize of $100 for laboratory research). In the event that a urological resident is not a first prize winner in either category, separate residents' prizes of $250 each will be awarded. 1. Contestants are limited to those who have been graduated not more than ten years, exclusive of time served in armed forces, and hospital interns or residents doing research in urology whose work shall be sponsored by their mentor, a member of the American Urological Association. Foreign physicians are eligible, provided that they are sponsored by a member of the American Urological Association. The offering is to represent the individual work of the essayist, or if done by a group, the candidate shall state the percentage of the problem he had personally done and the names of those who have directed or taken part in the study. 2. The subject matter of the essay shall be the result of some specific clinical or laboratory research, not necessarily animal, in urology. Those papers that have been published or have been submitted for publication will be disqualified. A manuscript may also be entered in local branch contests but the winning essays become the property of the American Urological Association and must be withdrawn from other contests. 3. The manuscript shall be in proper form for publication in the Journal of Urology; detailed case reports, extra pictures and explanations can be included in an appendix. Publication in the Journal is subject to the decision of the editorial board. 4. Five copies of all material (manuscript, bibliography, tabulated data, photographs, charts and drawings) shall be submitted. In the case of an artist's drawings, photographic copies may be submitted instead of the originals. 5. The offering shall be distinguished by legend, and in a sealed envelope with the distinguishing legend on the outside must be the name, address and institutional affiliation of the competitor.

6. The essayist shall also give the following information: a) Name of medical school from which he graduated, and date when he received his medical degree. b) Urological training: in what clinic or with what urologist and for how long. (Be specific as to dates, positions held, whether in a hospital or in an outpatient department, etc.; name of hospital and location.) c) Length of time in private practice of urology. (Please be specific as to dates and location.) d) Percentage of present practice which is urological. 7. Essays shall be in the hands of the Secretary of the American Urological Association on or before December 1, 1970. 8. At the discretion of the Program Committee, the winners of the first prizes shall have a place, wit.h special designation, on the program of tbe 1971 meeting of the Association to be held at the )?almer House, Chicago, Illinois, May 16-20, 1971. 9. The Prize Essay Committee shall decide which of the essays shall receive the prizes; and also is privileged to omit any or all awards if the essays submitted are not deemed worthy. AMERICAN UROLOGICAL ASSOCIATION FILM LIBRARY COMMITTEE The Film Library Committee is compiling a list of motion pictures pertaining to urologic research, diagnosis, patient care and surgical techniques. AMERICAN UROLOGICAL ASSOCIATION NOMENCLATURE AND SUGGESTED RELATIVE UNIT VALUES FOR UROLOGICAL PROCEDURES Relative unit values for urological procedures have been recommended by the Association's Professional Relations Committee. Copies of the September 1, 1968 revision of the nomenclature and relative unit values may be obtained from the headquarters of the American Urological Association, 1120 North Charles Street, Baltimore, Maryland 21201 at the rate of $2 per copy. PLACEMENT REGISTRY The American Medical Association and the American Urological Association are beginning the second year of their pilot placement registry which offers assistance to physicians seeking residencies and to approved hospitals seeking residents to fill urologic vacancies. The registry is being tried on a special pilot basis and marks expansion of the AMA's established Placement Service since formerly all registrations were limited to positions beyond the training level. The Service is developing 1) a roster of approved residencies available and 2) a list of physicians seeking training in Urology. Further inquiries are encouraged so that the Placement Service may be of assistance to those who have already registered with us and so that we may expand the program to increase its effectiveness. The Editors will judge a paper primarily on the basis of originality and accuracy of content, and after that on the simplicity, clarity and brevity of a good grammatical style.
