The problem of wave scattering by a grating consisting of coaxial impedance bodies of revolution is solved. The efficient numerical algorithm based on the modified null field method is offered. The method is applied both to scalar and vector formulations of the problem. The numerical results are obtained for various geometries of the grating elements. & 2011 Elsevier Ltd. 1. Introduction The problem of diffraction of waves on periodical gratings is of great interest in optics, radiophysics, acoustics and other areas of science and engineering [1]. At the same time this problem is difficult for research. Thus the development of effective algorithms to solve the problem is rather actual. One of such approaches is the pattern equation method (PEM) [2,3]. It has been previously established that PEM allows to develop high-speed algorithms for similar problems in the case when the distance between the elements of the grating is very small. Besides using PEM one can get the analytical (asymptotical) solution of the considered problem (see below). However there is some restriction for the scatterer geometry consisting in that the scatterer (in particular the element of a grating) should belong to the class of slightly nonconvex bodies [4]. Thus to solve the problem alternative methods are essential. In this paper we develop the numerical algorithm based on modified null field method

(MNFM), which has previously been successfully applied in [5,6]. MNFM as well as the method of current integral equations is rigorous. It permits to obtain the characteristics of the wave field with any preassigned precision. The method is applicable to the diffraction problems for scatterers with analytical borders including non-convex bodies. Besides this approach permits to develop simple and universal algorithms adaptable for wide class of boundary problems for instance scattering by gratings, diffraction on a group of bodies, scattering of eigenmodes on obstacles in dielectric waveguides, etc. The present paper considers diffraction of a plane wave on the infinite periodic grating, consisting of impedance bodies of revolution located at one axis. We study both electromagnetic and acoustic statement of the problem. As it is specified above the problem is solved by MNFM. The null field method (NFM) has been offered for the first time by Waterman [7] (see also [8]). The modification of NFM named in the literature also as a method of T-matrix is successfully used to solve a wide class of diffraction problems (see for example [9]). The basis for the NFM is some relation (see below) which is satisfied everywhere inside the scatterer [7,8]. If we require that this relation is fulfilled on some closed surface inside the scatterer the

initial boundary problem is reduced to the integral equation of the first kind relative to unknown current distributed on the surface of the body. In papers [5,6] it has been shown that for developing of the most high-speed and stable algorithms the auxiliary surface should be constructed by means of analytical deformation of the surface of the scatterer [10]. In [5,6] this version of NFM is called the modified null field method. In solving the considered problem the periodic Green’s function is used. We calculate the Green’s function in two ways. In the case of large distance (along coordinate which is perpendicular axis of a lattice) between point of source and point of observation, one can use a series obtained by the Poison formula. In the case when the distance is small it is possible to expand the Green’s function into a series of spherical harmonics. The coefficients of this series present integrals, which depend on grating period and the angle of incidence of the plane wave, but not on the geometry of its elements. This fact allows us to reduce the computation time, because these integrals can be evaluated prior to calculation of the matrix elements of algebraic system. Note that the algorithm for computing the Green’s function is analogous to the method proposed in [11], which considered the problem of diffraction on a body in circular waveguide (see also [1,12,13]). Of some interest is the asymptotical solution of the problem with the assumption that the period of the grating tends to infinity. By the help of PEM the integrooperator equation relative to the spectral function (the pattern) of the grating is derived. This equation permits us to obtain the asymptotic formulas for the pattern of the grating for large period of the structure. We apply combine method to find the pattern of the grating with large period based on PEM and MNFM. 2. The scalar problem Let us consider the grating consisting of identical coaxial impedance bodies of revolution. We assume that the grating has the period d. Most of the matrix is calculated with the help of the FFT, which immediately yields the set of the integrals in (64) for various m. It is seen from formula (63) that the integrands have poles corresponding to the Floquet modes of the grating. In order to integrate along a contour that does not pass near the poles, we use the analyticity of the integrands and perform integration along the contour which makes an angle of 451 with the real axis in the neighborhood of the origin at the complex plane a [17]. Since the integrands are the smooth functions in a certain neighborhood of this contour, integration is easily performed with the use of standard numerical techniques. 5. At high magnitude of the parameter l and the small distance between the scatterers the problem of such geometry is little different from two-dimensional problem of the scattering by the infinite round cylinder (the normal incidence of the plane wave is assumed). As well known this problem has analytical solution. In Fig. 3 the dependence of ! the value 9 F 0 ðy0 , jÞ9 (curve 1) for the grating consisting of closely spaced superellipsoids is presented. The parameters of the problem are the following: ka=2.5, kc=5, l=10 and period of the grating kd=10.1. The grating is assumed to be irradiated by the plane wave (87). Curve 2 in the figure corresponds to the case of the scattering by the infinite round cylinder with the radius ka=2.5. One can see rather small difference between both dependences.

dependences for the lattice consisting from double-lobes of revolution. The impedance Z of the grating elements is equal to zero (Figs. 4, 6 and 8) or equal to B (Figs. 5, 7 and 9). Thus we consider the grating which is formed from ideal elements or so-called black bodies. The parameters of the problem are as follows: the radius of the sphere ka=10, the spheroid semiaxes ka=2.5, kc=10, the parameters of the double-lobe of revolution q=2 and kc=6.25, ka=3.75. The period of the grating kd=20.1 for the case of spheres (spheroids) and kd=8.9 for the case of double-lobes of revolution. The incident plane wave is of form (87). Note that the solid curves in the figures demonstrate the dependences of the scattering pattern of the central element of the grating and the dashed curves correspond to the case of isolated body which is located in the free space and has the same sizes. As is seen from the figures the interaction between the grating elements is manifested to a greater extent when the impedance of the bodies is equal to zero. The maximal difference between the solid and dashed curves is observed in the case of the grating formed from the double-lobes of revolution and minimal difference corresponds to the case of the lattice from the spheroids (if the impedance of the spheroids is equal to B the solid and dashed curves practically coincide). We now turn to the results of asymptotical solution of the problem with kd b1. Figs. 10 and 11 demonstrate this solution for scalar problem of wave scattering by the grating consisting of ideal spheres (Fig. 10) and ideal spheroids (Fig. 11). In the figures the absolute value of scalar pattern of zero mode of the grating is plotted. The radius of the sphere is ka = 1, the semiaxes of the spheroid are kc= 1, ka= 0.25. The curves 1 in the figures correspond to the case of kd = 2.1 and curves 2 illustrate the pattern for kd = 4. The solid lines in the figures illustrate the solution of the problem obtained by MNFM and dotted lines demonstrate the asymptotical solution. As is seen from the figures, even for the shortest distance between the elements of the grating equal to 0.1, both methods of the solution of the problem differ by less than 5% for the grating of spheres and by approximately 10% for the grating of spheroids. When this distance increases to a value of two, the curves practically coincide.

7. Conclusions Using MNFM the three-dimensional problem of wave scattering by the grating consisting of coaxial bodes of revolution is solved. The system of integral equations relative to the current on the central element of the grating is derived. The efficient algorithm for calculation of the Green’s function is offered. To test the method the residual at the auxiliary surface inside the central element is calculated. The obtained results demonstrate that the condition of null field is fulfilled with a high accuracy. The problem of wave scattering by closely spaced superellipsoids of revolution is also considered. It is shown that the pattern of this structure coincides very closely with the pattern of infinite cylinder of the corresponding radius. The dependences of the pattern of zero mode of the grating for various geometry of its elements are obtained. The asymptotical solution of the scalar problem for the large period of the structure is derived. This solution is illustrated by an example of the grating consisting of ideal spheres or spheroids. The results show good agreement between the asymptotical and rigorous solutions.
