Abstract The ethanolic extract of Agaricus blazei and ethyl acetate and hydroalcoholic fractions were evaluated for their antioxidant activity. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. Keywords: Agaricus blazei; Antioxidant activity; DPPH radical; ABTS radical

1. Plant A. blazei fruiting bodies, collected on “Estancia Valemar” (Sao Jose do Rio Preto — SP) were identified by Dr. Arailde Fontes Urben (EMBRAPA researcher). 2. Uses in traditional medicine The infusion of the fruiting body has traditionally been used in Brazil for prevention of cancer [1–4], and diabetes, hyperlipidemia, arteriosclerosis and chronic hepatitis activities [5]. 3. Previously isolated classes of constituents Ergosterol [5], polysaccharides [2,6,7] and phenolic compounds [8].

4. Tested material Ethanol extract (yield: 4.43%) of the dried (40 °C) material and ethylacetate fraction (yield: 2.25%) and hydroxyalcoholic soluble fraction (0.54%). 5. Studied activity Bleaching of the DPPH [9,10] and ABTS•+ radicals [11]. 6. Results Reported in Table 1. 7. Conclusions The ethanolic extract and the ethyl acetate and hydroalcoholic fractions from A. blazei have a powerful antioxidant activity useful for the treatment of various diseases mediated by radicals species.
