AlliedSignal is marketing two low molecular weight polythenes for use as compatibilizers and/or lubricants in mixed polymer systems. Polyace 573 is maleated and contains reactive anhydride groups. It is said to be particularly in effective as a compatibilizer polypropylene/nylon mixes used in producing barrier packaging films. Polyace 804 is a preblend of polythene and petroleum wax designed for use as a lubricant in extruded rigid and flexible PVC. The wax is paraffin wax, which is not traditionally used in PVC. Two antistats from ICI Surfactants are designed for use in polyolefin films. Atmer 168 is an ethoxylated amine aimed primarily at biaxially orientated polypropylene film, intended for use with Atmer 129. Atmer 169 is an ethoxylated amine with a low coloration. Gardner scale 2. Carrying food-use approval, it is used in the manufacture of LDPE film and some styrene-based products. A further product, Atmer 190, is said to offer performance in such polymers as polystyrene, styrene copolymers (HIPS, SAN and ABS), rigid PVC and polycarbonate. The product reportedly features superior thermal stability. allowing it to be compounded into engineering resins without degradation. They are marketed as the Incozol range. Both products are said to enable rapid curing of aliphatic-based moisture-triggered systems without carbon dioxide gassing and subsequent ‘pin-holing’ of the cured material. Also referred to as ‘latent hardeners’, they remain inactive until application, whereupon they hydrolyze to reveal active amine and hydroxyl functions. Incozol 4 is a urethane biz-oxazolidine for general use, while Incozol LV exhibits a considerably lower viscosity than conventional products of this type.
