Abstract

Since t r i t i u m is a very low energy beta e m i t t e r , i t is d i f f i c u l t to q u a n t l t a t e accurately and reproduclbly. Many types of detectors have been developed to quantitate t r i t i u m on a s o l i d support. These methods include s o l u b i l l z a t l o n of sample from s o l i d support followed by l i q u i d s c i n t i l l a t i o n counting, Ceiger counting, solid state detectors (APD), gas proportional counting, and l i q u i d s c i n t i l l a t i o n counting without sample preparation. The q u a n t i t a t i o n of t r i t i u m by these various methods w i l l be compared In d e t a i l with the advantages and disadvantages of each technique being presented. Parameters to be explored are s e n s i t i v i t y , detection l i m i t , r e p r o d u c i b i l i t y , accuracy, and e f f i c i e n c y of counting for the f i v e methods for quantitating t r i t i u m on a s o l i d support.

Abstract

The a v a i l a b i l i t y of commercial low l e v e l l i q u i d s c i n t i l l a t i o n counters has e n a b l e d a wide use of u l t r a s e n s i t i v e b e t a c o u n t i n g . Applications include 14C dating, hydrology studies, geology studies, food a d u l t e r a t i o n studies, environmental c o n t r o l , and monitoring for nuclear power plants. In a d d i t i o n , recent developments allow the use of a general purpose l i q u i d s c i n t i l l a t i o n counters for economic low l e v e l counting. This opens new areas of application in the biomedical f i e l d . The use of a low l e v e l l l q u i d s c i n t i l l a t i o n counter for these applications w i l l be discussed in d e t a i l with the advantages, as well as the l i m i t a t i o n s of this technique. The minimum detectable l i m i t and background of the Io~ l e v e l counting technique w i l l be presented. Each of the applications w i l l be discussed in d e t a i l .
