Evonik constructs speciality silicones facility in Shanghai, China

G

ermany’s Evonik Industries Ag has started constructing a production facility in Shanghai, China, for organically modified speciality silicones. The project is part of a global investment initiative. A first expanded production plant became operational in Essen in late 2014. The new facility is being constructed at the MultiUser-Site (MUSC) in the Shanghai Chemical Industry Park, with completion planned for mid-2017. The investment volume is in the high double-digit million euro range. Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony in Shanghai, Klaus Engel, the chairman of Evonik’s executive board, said: ‘We want to expand our speciality silicones production capacities in Asia to serve the rising demand with local production. That is why we are enlarging our production capacities in this region.’

Aesseal achieves five-star health and safety grade

I

n the UK, Aesseal Plc, a specialist in the design and manufacture of mechanical seals and support systems, has achieved a five-star grading in the British Safety Council’s Safety, Health and Environmental Integrated Audit. Awarded in March 2016, a detailed, quantified and objective evaluation of the occupational health, safety and environmental management system of Aesseal’s global headquarters was undertaken. The audit measures the performance against a number of key safety and environmental management indicators. Aesseal says that it achieved the highest rating. The audit provides organisations with a worldwide benchmark of their safety and environmental management systems against current best practice, to enable continual improvement. The 6

audit specification includes performance measurements in two additional safety management indicators – leadership and continuous improvement – which are continually assessed, alongside other indicators, throughout the audit process. Within the audit the British Safety Council has placed emphasis on the organisation’s approach to occupational health, employee wellbeing, safety culture, allocation of resources to health and safety, and planning for change – all of which are considered important best practice factors. Publications of Interest Worldwide demand for gaskets and seals to rise by 5.3% a year

T

he world market for gaskets and seals is forecast to expand by 5.3% per annum to $70.8 billion in 2019, according to a report published by The Freedonia Group.

Entitled ‘World Gaskets & Seals’, this study says that demand in many parts of the world will return to a more moderate pace of growth after recovering from 2009 recessionary lows through to 2014. Healthy increases in motor vehicle production, machinery output, and electrical and electronic equipment production will bolster demand for gaskets and seals. In addition, growing fixed investment levels will lead to purchases of gasket and seal-containing vehicles and equipment. Furthermore, expanding demand for more expensive sealing products made from advanced materials will boost market value. However, greater utilisation of better performing, longer lasting gaskets and seals will have a mixed effect on demand as initial value gains will be somewhat offset by decreased aftermarket sales opportunities. Freedonia says that the Africa and Middle East, and Asia–Pacific regions will record the strongest growth in percentage terms through to 2019. The Asia–Pacific region will be led by some of the fastest growing national markets in the world, such as India, Thailand, China, Indonesia and Malaysia – all of which are expected to post motor vehicle production increases well above the global average through to 2019. China surpassed the US to become the world’s largest gasket and seal market in 2009, and by 2019 China is expected to represent over onefourth of the world market. Gains in the Africa and Middle East, on the other hand, will be bolstered by relatively small, fast-growing markets in countries that are attempting to diversify away from resource extraction towards higher value manufactured goods. The more mature manufacturing economies of North America and Western Europe are also forecast to post gasket and seal demand increases through to 2019, although growth will not be as strong as that expected in less developed regions. Gains in North America will be bolstered by strong growth in Mexico, where suppliers will benefit from healthy output growth in motor vehicle manufacturing. However, the USA will continue to account for the majority of North American demand for the foreseeable future. Every major market for gaskets and seals is expected to register healthy gains through to 2019. Motor vehicle applications will continue to account for the largest share of product demand, bolstered by 3.9% yearly increases forecast in global automotive production.
