152A 874183 Latest developments in soil nailing (In French) Louis, C

Rev Fr Geotech N38, 1987, P61-68 The principles of soil nailing are presented and design methods for nailed slopes briefly discussed. Recent developments, such as face covering with precast concrete segments, deep installation of nails in unstable ground using vibratory techniques with the possibility of pregrouting, and general ground treatment, before, during or after nailing are considered. Examples of recent projects are shown. 874184 Breakout resistance of horizontal anchors in sand Chattopadhyay, B C; Pise, P J

Soils Found I:26, N4, Dec 1986, P16-22 An improved theoretical model is proposed to calculate the vertical breakout capacity of circular horizontal anchors in the sand. The model proposes a curved surface of failure through the soil. It indicates the existence of a characteristic depth, below which the breakout factor approaches a constant value, as is observed in practice. The model can accommodate a wide range of friction angles for sand. 874185 Rock bolting in German coal mines - state-of-the-art and recent developments Reuther, E U; Hermulheim, W

Proc 13th Congress of the Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions, Singapore, 11-16 May 1986 V3, P143-152. Publ Parkville: CMMI/AIMM, 1986 Rock bolts and weldmesh are becoming more common as a means of support for gate roads in deep German collieries. The functions of support, and the basic principles of rock bolting are described. The advantages and disadvantages of rock bolting and the traditional steel arch are discussed. Case histories are presented.

Direct rock support methods 874186 How to select the proper type of powered support Peng, S S; Shen, L S; Wu, J

Coil Guard I:235, N2, Feb 1987, P74-77 The shield support was introduced to US longwall faces in 1973. Due to its ability to control the roof effectively and to isotate the goal, it has created a safe working environment, with both production and productivity increasing considerably. The basic principles for the selection of support type are examined. Regardless of the method chosen, two basic requirements must be satisfied: (1) the supporting features of the shield must correspond with the weighting characteristics of the roof strata, and (2) effective control of the unsupported roof gap betweenthe faceline and the canopy must be possible. Methods for satisfying these requirements are presented. 874187 Model test study on double lining of tunnels Lui Piede

Tunnlg Undgr Space Tech V1, NI, 1986, P53-58 Simulation tests involving double lining of railroad tunnels are described and a nonlinear finite element analysis of the experimental results provided~ The analysis of the test results examines the load-bearing capacity of the structure, the state of the structure under load, and deformation of the rock mass and structure under test conditions. 874188 High pulp density hydraulic fills Barrett. J R: Fuller. P G: Miller. D R

Proc 13th Congress of the Council of t~lining and Metallurgical Institutions, Singapore, 11-16 May 1986 V3. P153-160. Publ Parkt'ille: CMM[ AIMM. 1986 As ideal hydraulic fill materials are not always available in metalliferous mines, recent approaches have used a fill of increased pulp density, which is delivered as a paste or dense slurry. These regimes of fill behaviour are defined. The material properties of fills of varying densities are outlined, and suitable plant to deliver such materials is described. Recent results indicate that high pulp density fills are stronger and have fewer permeability restrictions than conventional fills. In addition, rock fill or aggregate can be incorporated without extra distribution costs.

874189 Backfill at Western Deep Levels Diering, D H: Williams, A W

Proc 2nd Group Mining Symposium, Johannesburg, Sept 1985 P173-182. Johannesburg: Anglo American Corporation. 1985 Rockburst is strongly correlated with the energy release rate (ERR) associated with mining. E R R can be reduced under given conditions if elastic convergence can be reduced. At Western Deep Levels, South Africa, a program was started in 1979 using stabilising pillars over the majority of the mine but with a full scale waste filling exercise at one longwall. Plant for a crushed waste fill system and new plant using de-slimed mine tailings are described. Results of work to date. problems with pillar mining, and current thinking concerning implementation of a waste fill program are discussed.

874190 Slime fill as a support system Stonestreet, K F; Schalkwyk, L V: Gericke, D

Proc 2nd Group Mining Symposium, Johannesburg, Sept 1985 P183-187. Johannesburg: Anglo American Corporation. 1985 Difficult mining conditions arise at the No 9 Shaft, Free State Geduld, due to the presence of a layer o f incompetent argillaceous mudstone. Conventional support allows dilation o f the fractured hanging wall with resultant falls m unsupported areas. Dewatered slime fill can be used to advantage under these difficult conditions. The equipment used, initial problems and current state of affairs are described.

Grouting 874191 Jet grouting: snail's pace of adoption Andromalos, K B; Pettit, P J

Civ Engng, N Y V56, N12, Dec 1986, P40-43 Jet grouting produces 'soilcrete' by intimate, hydraulicallyinduced mixing of a cement slurry with the native soil, and is readily applicable to the improvement o f mechanical properties of soft soils. It is widely used in many countries, but n o t m North America. The applications and technical and economic advantages and disadvantages of jet grouting are discussed, and case studies of its use to construct a cutoff wall, and for ground stabilisation during shaft sinking are described.
