PATENTS BASF settles patent dispute BASF has settled patent dispute with Belgian technology company Umicore. Umicore now has a licence for the production, use, sale and distribution of nickel-cobalt manganese cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries in the US under patents held by BASF and Argonne. BASF and Argonne had filed a lawsuit at the beginning of 2015. The battery technology developed by Argonne had been licensed to BASF. The German company had accused Umicore of impeding the company's entry onto the market in lithium-ion battery technologies. Unicore had rejected the charges. But the International Trade Commission in the US confirmed last Dec that the BASF-Argonne patents were infringed and banned Umicore from importing nickelmanganese-cobalt cathode materials into the US. Method for preparing caprolactam by using a microreactor under Lewis acid catalysis A method is proposed for preparing caprolactam by using a microreactor under Lewis acid catalysis, wherein a hydroxyl group in a cyclohexanone oxime is activated to obtain a cyclohexanone oxime sulfonates intermediate, then rearranged under Lewis acid catalysis to prepare the caprolactam. The method of this invention is a simple and safe process with a high degree of selectivity. The reaction condition is mild, an efficient reaction can take place even at room temperature. The reaction time is short. The conversion of the cyclohexanone oxime can reach 100% within a short time. The selectivity of the caprolactam can reach 99%. The energy consumption is greatly reduced in the premise of maintaining a high yield, and the production cost is reduced, being an efficient and green and environmentally friendly method of for synthesizing the caprolactam. BOOKSHELF Concepts of Modern Catalysis and Kinetics Since its first publication 12 years ago, Concepts of Modern Catalysis and Kinetics has become a standard textbook for graduate students at universities worldwide. Emphasizing fundamentals from thermodynamics, physical chemistry, spectroscopy, solid-state chemistry and quantum

chemistry, it introduces catalysis from a molecular perspective, and stresses how it is interwoven with the field of reaction kinetics. The authors go on to explain how the world of reacting molecules is connected to the real world of industry, by discussing the various scales (nano - micro macro) that play a role in catalysis. Reflecting the modern-day focus on energy supplies, this third edition devotes attention to such processes as gas-to-liquids, coal-to-liquids, biomass conversion and hydrogen production. I. Strategies for Palladium-Catalyzed Non-directed and Directed C-H Bond Functionalization Featured topics include the influence of palladacyclic systems in C-H bond functionalization (need for newer catalytic systems for better efficiency), mechanistic aspect of the functionalization strategies leading to better systems, and applications of these methodologies to natural product synthesis and material synthesis. The text reviews the use of mechanistic tools for understanding and assisting the development of better functionalization strategies. It also discusses the finer aspects of C-H bond functionalization, such as control of regioselectivity with or without directing groups. A. R. Kapdi and D. Maiti (eds), 1st edn, July 2017, Elsevier B.V., Amsterdam, ISBN-13: 978-0128052549, 500 pp.

Chemical Reaction Kinetics: Concepts, Methods and Case Studies This book provides a practical approach to chemical reaction kinetics—from basic concepts to laboratory methods. It features numerous realworld examples and case studies. The book focuses on fundamental aspects of reaction kinetics with an emphasis on mathematical methods for analyzing experimental data and interpreting results. It covers the basic concepts of reaction kinetics, parameters for measuring the progress of chemical reactions, variables that affect reaction rates, and ideal reactor performance. Mathematical methods for determining reaction kinetic parameters are described in detail with the help of real-world examples and fully-worked stepby-step solutions. Both analytical and numerical solutions are exemplified. The book begins with an introduction to the basic concepts of stoichiometry, thermodynamics, and chemical kinetics. This is followed by chapters featuring in-depth discussions of reaction kinetics; methods for studying irreversible reactions with one, two and three components; reversible reactions; and complex reactions. In the concluding chapters the author addresses reaction mechanisms, enzymatic reactions, data reconciliation, parameters, and examples of industrial reaction kinetics. J. Ancheyta, 1st edn, August 2017, John Wiley & Sons, Hoboken, NJ, ISBN-13: 978-1119226642, 288 pp.
