Basic Clinical Rehabilitation Medicine, 2nd ed, edited by Mehrsheed Sinaki, 554 pp, with illus, $39.95, St. Louis, Mosby (telephone: 800-325-4177),1993, ISBN 0-8016-7991-5

Type of Book: A multiauthored teaching text on basic clinical rehabilitation medicine. Scope ofBook: This extremely comprehensive book encompasses all clinical aspects of rehabilitation medicine. Contents: This second edition covers several advances in the field since the first edition was published in 1987. It continues tobe a "must own and read" textbook for all trainees in this field, for most clinical practitioners, and certainly for those who have the responsibility for teaching up-to-date methods in rehabilitation medicine. The 42 chapters are categorized into one of 14 parts. The first four chapters discuss assessment of a patient in rehabilitation medicine. Nine sections deal with specific organs, systems, and disorders (for example, nervous system, spinal cord, and metabolic bone and connective tissue disease) or groups of patients (for example, pediatric and geriatric populations). One section is devoted to the important psychosocial aspects of disability, and in another section, three chapters focus on specific therapeutic modalities. Finally, ambulatory rehabilitation services are appropriately recognized. Strengths: The main strength lies in the clear, concise manner in which each chapter is presented by people working in this field on a day-to-day basis. Other strengths are its completeness, the quality and extent of illustrative material, and the appropriate reference citations. Deficiencies: The book is daunting and uninviting. Although it is not a book that one would "pick up" just to read, it provides answers to a specific question or set of questions. Recommended Audience: This book is a must have for all trainees in rehabilitation medicine. It should also be in the libraries of all physicians (family practitioners, general internists, and orthopedic surgeons) who deal with common complaints of back pain, stroke, musculoskeletal disease, and heart disease.
