Dynamic sealing
B e l l o w s seals o r d e r e d for oil and gas p r o j e c t s Edge-welded metal bellows mechanical seals are to be supplied to t w o major oil & gas industry projects. Control of emissions is a high priority for the heavy duty process p u m p s on the Kalundborg refinery expansion in D e n m a r k as well as those on Hamilton Oil Co.'s Liverpool Bay D e v e l o p m e n t but t w o different solutions have b e e n selected. Statoil, the o p e r a t o r of the Kalundborg refinery, has o p t e d for EG&G Sealol's Emission Containment Seal (ECS) w h i c h is used for a n u m b e r of 'light end' h y d r o c a r b o n applications. The ECS arrangement is a dry running secondary seal in a tandem configuration, w h i c h does not require the support of a liquid barrier system. The operating p a r a m e t e r s for the ECS are t e m p e r a t u r e s to 290 °C, c o n t a i n m e n t of process fluid to 25 bar and shaft speeds to 60 m/s. Standard sizes range from 22 m m to 110 mm. Hamilton Oil Co. has also selected seals from EG&G Sealol for its on-shore gas terminal at Point of Ayr, North Wales. The c o m p a n y has requested a specially designed barrier system w h i c h requires the elimination of all s c r e w e d connections w h e r e v e r possible. The pressurised system, designed to the API Standard Plan 53, will support a double seal a r r a n g e m e n t on applications w h i c h are considered to be of a highly toxic nature. PTFE radial lip seal An optimised lip configuration and the fact that the stainless steel insert does not contact the media, are the advantages claimed by FTL Fluid Seals for its n e w PTFE radial lip seal designated HTS II 9535. Seals can b e offered with various lip configurations to suit specific operational parameters. The standard seal material is PTFE carbon with a n e w material option for foodstuff applications. Sizes are available up to 1000 mm. The seal has b e e n developed for o p e n housings and is therefore easy to clean in service. The newly developed sealing lip has greatly reduced lip deformation but still offers lower leakage w h e n c o m p a r e d to similar seals. The steel seat offers secure retention within the housing while still allowing easy removal as necessary. The seals will w o r k at up to 6 bar b e t w e e n 70 and + 200 °C; they can seal 1.5 bar at 18 m/s, Additionally, the seal exhibits good dry running proper-

ties and high resistance to aggressive media. The main application areas for these seals are the machine tool, chemical, pharmaceutical, electrical and m o t o r industries. Typical applications are centrifugal pumps, agitators, gears, fans compressors, mixers and machine tools. M e c h a n i c a l seal m e e t s DIN 24960 Burgmann's service-proven HR principle (rotating c o u n t e r ring, stationary spring-loaded part) for mechanical seals is n o w also available for DIN 24960 connections. R e p l a c e m e n t is straightforward on all DIN 24256 p u m p s with a conically o p e n e d seal cover (for cylindrical stuffing b o x e d a reworking of the cover is necessary). The short c o u n t e r ring with double elastic bearing is installed directly b e t w e e n the rear face of the impeller and the shortened, modified shaft sleeve.
