EDUCATIONAL the one where pickles come to life and march toward him through a mountain of salt or the one where he opens the door to his kitchen cupboard, usually stocked with pretzels and chips, and an avalanche of salt pours out. These scenes, however, begin to take up valuable time that could be better spent showing practical ways to reduce sodium in the diet. A spread of fresh breads, meats, vegetables, and fruits served for a dinner, attractively shows foods low in sodium. The film would be a light-hearted way to get patients motivated to stay on their sodium-restricted diets and would be most effective if accompanied by handouts containing practical guidelines for diet adherence. Nutrition for the Runner (and other ath· letes), Osman, J., 1981. From Photo Lab, 3825 Georgia Ave. NW, Washington, DC 20011, filmstrip, 110 frames, audiocassette, 20 min., $28.50. Dispelling some of the common myths of athletic nutrition, this filmstrip emphasizes the interaction of nutrition and performance. The strong points of the filmstrip are its coverage of sports anemia and the importance of water to the athlete. Other areas are overly simplified. For instance, athletes are strongly advised to avoid caffeine due to its diuretic effects, but no mention is made of its possible role in slowing glycogen depletion. The narrator unequivocally claims that carbohydrate loading allows athletes to "run right through the wall of exhaustion," though later she discusses some of the limits of this practice. Despite these oversimplifications, the filmstrip would be useful to coaches and athletes. PAMPHLET
