This note transmits a brief report about a recent International symposium on Fuzzy Systems and Knowledge Engineering held in Guangzhou and Guiyang, P.R.C., during the period of July 16--15, 1987. The meeting was sponsored by the Chinese Association of Fuzzy Mathematics and Fuzzy Systems, jointly organized by Guangzhou University and Guizhou Association of Science and Technology. The founder of fuzzy sets theory, Prof. L.A. Zadeh, as the honorary chairman of this symposium was present at the meeting and gave special lectures both in Guangzhou and Guiyang. More than 220 participants from 12 countries attended the meeting. There were roughly 100 speakers on the symposium program. The first part of the symposium on July 11-13, was held in Guangzhou, the garden city in southeast China, the other part was in Guiyang, capital of Guizhou province, in southwest China. The most impressive fact manifested to al| attendees at the symposium was both the quantity and quality of world research in fuzzy systems and knowledge eningeering. Two banquets were given by Guangzhou municipal government and Guizhou provincial government respectively. The symposium was arranged so that all attendees had opportunities to do some sight seeing both in Gua~.~hou and Guiyang. The brilliant appearance of Miao-a minority nationality of China, the evening tour sailing along the Pearl River in Guangzhou, the miraculous Dragon Cave and the Huang Goushu Waterfa, in Guizhou .... marvellous and unforgettable to every one. Without any doubt, this was a successful symposium. The friendship among Chinese and the people of other countries, the understanding and cooperation among research workers in the field of fuzzy systems and knowledge engineering, the progress of the common cause of all participants, will undoubtodly lead to a new stage. The proceedings of this symposium {including 174 papers, divided in 3 volumes with 864 pages) were published on the 10th of July.
