Numiform86: numerical methods in industrial forming processes, K Mattiasson, A Samuelsson, R D Wood and 0 C Zienkiewicz (eds), A A Balkema Publishers (1986) 404 pp £36. 75 The stated main purpose of the 2nd International Conference on Numerical Methods in Industrial Forming Processes, was to bring together scientists studying the subject in both the universities and industry. The conference was held in Gothenburg, FRG in August 1986, and this volume forms its proceedings. The topics examined include mathematical modelling and computer methods relevant to forming processes, as well as more specialized papers dealing with numerical methods for processes such as rolling, forging, extrusion, sheet forming, casting and polymer forming. The finite element method is used in most of the papers. 59 papers are included, but there is no index.

Advanced computer graphics, Tosiyasu L Kunii (ed), 5pringer-Verlag (1986) 504 pp DM 195 A balance of papers on computer graphics are presented in this proceedings of the Computer Graphics Tokyo 86 conference. There are 34 papers covering such topics as VLSI CADCAM, visual databases, computer animation, computational geometry and mechanical CADCAM. There are 264 figures of which 97 are in colour. About 40% of the papers originated from the USA, 30% from Japan, 20% from Europe and 10% from Canada.

Advances in computer graphics I, G Enderle, M Grave and F Lillenhagen (ads), Springer-Verlag (1986) 512 pp DM 136 The aim of this Eurographics Seminar is to give a survey of the state of the art of computer graphics. It includes papers from USA, Europe, Norway and Canada. It is divided into four parts: the first part includes an introduction to computer graphics which is written in French (all the other papers are in English). The second

part covers hardware for computer graphics and basic algorithms. The third part discusses various standards for graphics including GKS and PHIGS. The fourth part examines applications of computer graphics.

Product data interfaces in CADCAM applications: design implementation and experiences, J Encarnacao, R Schuster and E Voge (ads), SpringerVerlag (1986) 254 pp DM 128 Standards are being developed for a number of areas in CADCAM, including: • computer graphics • sculptured surfaces • data exchange for engineering drawings This book looks at product data interfaces in particular. There are sections on the goals of CAD interfaces, graphics standards (particularly GKS), IGES (Initial Graphics Exchange Specification), VDA Surface Interface and validation.

Proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Automated Deduction, J H Siekmann (ed), Springer-Verlag (1986) 708 pp, DM 96 The conference was held in July 1986 in Oxford, UK. Of the 92 papers submitted, 49 papers were presented and there were four invited talks. Subjects included, term rewriting systems, nonclassical deduction, unification theory, program verification, graph-based deduction and equality reasoning. There is also a section of extended abstracts on current deduction systems.

VLSI85: VLSI design of digital systems, E Horbst (ed), North-Holland (1986) 440 pp The importance of CAD in VLSI is noticeable in this volume, with contributions spanning such topics as system design, silicon compilers, layout programs, design rules, test strategies and

verification programs. This volume forms the proceedings of the IFIP TC 10/WG 10.5 International Conference on Very Large Scale Integration, which was held in Tokyo, Japan in August 1985. The 41 papers are divided into 11 sections and include coverage of topics such as simulation for VLSl, processors, hardware algorithms, architectures and hierarchy in VLSI. There is a two page author index.

CA DCA M systems: justification, implementation, productivity measurement, E J Preston, G W Crawford and M E Coticchia, Marcel Dekker Inc (1984) 358 pp .,,$47.50 The justification of a CADCAM system is dealt with in terms of qualitative rationales, service bureau considerations, cost justification, proposal and benchmarking. Implementation is considered under the headings of facility planning, organization, administration; personnel planning, development, organization; training; system planning, organization, administration and preventative maintenance. In the section on productivity measurement, evaluation is the major topic of discussion. The book concludes with a glossary of CADCAM terms and a four page index.

Modern graphic communications: a CAD approach, D L Ryan, PrenticeHall International (1986) 358 pp £37.40 Graphic communications is a concept that includes the use of any tool for the production of diagrams, drawings etc. This includes the use of computers. This book is aimed at designers who will use a computer-aided design/drafting system, but who do not necessarily understand computer programming. Subjects covered include, geometric constructions, character generation, cognitive graphics, geometric modelling, dimensioning and tolerancing. There are also chapters on various types of displays and single, partial and multiviews. A three page index is also provided.
