Multieriterion Optimization in Engineering with FORTRAN

Programs A. Osyczka and B. J. Davies John Wiley and Sons Ltd, February 1984, 200 pp., $36.35/ £21.00, ISBN 0 85312 4817 This book is a lucid presentation of fundamental ideas in multicriterion optimisation problems which have recently attracted much interest in several scientific disciplines. Of interest to engineers in many fields, e.g. mechanical, civil and chemical, as well as those applying operational research to solve problems in their own fields of study. For the most universal methods discussed in the book, FORTRAN computer codes are developed and documented in the appendices. These programs are both flexible and efficient and can be used directly to solve a wide range of engineering problems. Some subroutines can be considered separately and thus can be incorporated with a minimum modification to quite sophisticated developments. The publishers know of no such competing work in this field.

Designing Knowledge-based Systems T. R. Addis Kogan Page Publications, September 1984, 128 pp., £10.95, ISBN 0 85038 859 7 In this book the different views held and tools used by cyberneticians, systems analysts and knowledge engineers are brought together to present a coherent approach to knowledge-based systems. In particular the idea of a rule is examined in the context of relational databases, and differences between knowledge and data are discussed.

This volume records the proceedings of a conference organised by The British Computer Society and the University of Aberdeen and Cambridge. The object of the conference is to stimulate database research in Europe and the papers included here reflect research and discussion in topical areas of database technology at an international level. The subjects covered in this volume are: database machines, query facilities, conceptual modelling, new functionalities, distributed database techniques, performance evaluation.

Optimization in Computer Aided Design Proceedings of the IFIP WG 5.2 Working Conference, Lyon J. S. Gero 24-26 October 1983

Each part consists of a number of papers in English or French on all aspects of CADCAM. Integration of CAD/CAM Detlef Kochan North-Holland, 1984, 280 pp., US $42.25, ISBN 0 4 4 4 87530 1 This proceedings volume contains the ten selected papers of the IFIP Working Conference on CAD/CAM.

This is the first book on optimisation in computer-aided design, say the publishers. It explores both optimisation as a context for computer-aided design and computer-aided design as a context for optimisation. In addition to the papers themselves, this volume contains discussions of their contents by an expert group.
