KMS launches latest spiral UF membranes for electrocoat paint applications

U

S-based Koch Membrane Systems Inc (KMS) has launched its latest product line of electrocoat (E-coat) paint, spiral ultrafiltration (UF) membranes which, it claims, offers manufacturers greater recovery of paint resin and pigments. The firm, which develops and manufactures membranes for filtration applications, says that it pioneered the potted spiral design for E-coat paint in 2003. This innovation provided energy efficiency, zero bypass operation and longer membrane life, as well as a simplified system design with easy and safe membrane replacement. The new KPAK® PLUS and SPIRAPAK PLUS modules feature optimised element design and construction to improve performance whilst providing the same excellent separation properties and low fouling characteristics as the traditional KPAK and SPIRAPAK modules, says the company. ‘With up to 20% higher productivity, these new products will benefit end users by improving paint yields and reducing overall operating costs. They are a direct replacement for our previous line and do not require system modifications,’ explained Taylour Johnson, Product Manager, Industrial Processes, KMS. Benefits of UF in the E-coat process include: • paint recovery: recover up to 98% of paint solids for reuse, whilst generating rinse water (permeate) for use in the plant; • paint bath conductivity control: removes excess free ions, low molecular weight resins and carry-in from pretreatment; and • hazardous waste minimisation: recovers up to 98% of dragged out paint and reduces loading on the wastewater treatment plant. The KPAK PLUS and SPIRAPAK PLUS modules, as well as the PLUS version of the flanged and drop-in spiral elements for E-Coat paint are available in all product sizes and configurations. Hyflux set to supply second SWRO package for project in Iran

S

ingapore-based water and energy company Hyflux Ltd has received a letter of intent from Asia Water Development Engineering Co (AWDEC) to award a contract for a sea-water reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination package in Bandar Abbas, Iran. This follows the first contract that the company received earlier this year for a similar package for use at the same location (Membrane Technology May 2018, page 5). Pleased with the first phase of Hyflux’s progress under the first contract, AWDEC intends to further award Hyflux a contract to design, manufacture and supply another desalination unit with similar specifications as the first plant, to supply 200 000 m3 (52 834 410 gallons) of water per day. Together with the first desalination plant, both facilities will supply a total of 400 000 m3 (105 668 800 gallons) of water per day and form part of five desalination plants that AWDEC plans to build as part of the proposed Saghi Kosar (SAKO) Desalination and Power Plant in Bandar Abbas. oorsTek Inc used ACHEMA 2018, which was held recently in Frankfurt, Germany, as an opportunity to provide details of two ceramic membrane technologies that it has developed for more sustainable and efficient filtration. The technical ceramics manufacturer says it has designed new membrane filter technologies specifically for microfiltration and ultrafiltration of molecules and particles from aqueous solutions. ‘Our latest membrane filter developments will help our customers filter fluids or gases with a technology requiring less maintenance, whilst offering higher reliability and longer service time,’ said Andreas Schneider, Executive Vice President and Managing Director, Europe, CoorsTek. ‘Ceramic membranes are increasingly used to improve filtration performance, throughput

NEWS/IN BRIEF and operational cost in a broad range of sectors, such as biotechnology and the pharmaceutical, dairy, food and beverage, automotive, chemical and petrochemical industries.’ Details of the two ceramic membrane filter technologies are summarised below. • Multi-tube system – The multi-tube system consists of four, single ceramic tubes connected together to form a single ceramic part. Every tube performs in the same way in order to ensure more efficient filtration of liquids. In addition, quality control of the tubes is simplified and the filter is easier to clean. This technology is especially suitable for high-quality filtering that is needed in specific applications such as the production of pharmaceutical products. • Hollow-fibre system – This consists of ceramic tubes assembled into a high-density module. The compact tube module size reduces the footprint of the filtering unit. The ceramic tubes offer superior temperature and chemical resistance, compared with polymer tubes, and are capable of delivering a longer, useful service life under harsh production or cleaning conditions, says the firm. Aquaporin enters new agreement for RO membrane development

quaporin A/S, a water technology company based in Copenhagen, Denmark, with activities in Singapore and China, has entered into a development, supply and distribution agreement for Aquaporin Inside® reverse osmosis (RO) membranes, with a major global systems integrator and provider in a specific industry. The company says that this agreement, with both development and commercial activities, represents an important step in the commercialisation of the Aquaporin Inside technology and supports its strategy of going to market with leading system suppliers in select markets. H2O Innovation secures industrial projects totalling C$3.1 million

anada’s H2O Innovation Inc has been awarded four new industrial projects in North America worth C$3.1 million. The company, which designs and provides custom-built and integrated water treatment systems based on membrane filtration technology, for municipal, industrial, energy and natural resources end-users, says the first project was awarded by a major manufacturer in North Carolina, and involves an industrial wastewater treatment system, combining membrane bioreactor (MBR) and reverse osmosis (RO) technologies. The system will include two MBR trains that will treat 283.9 m3 (75 000 gallons) per day of wastewater, followed by an RO system that will treat 189.3 m3 (50 000 gallons) per day of MBR effluent. The second contract is for an industrial customer in the Midwest, with which H2O Innovation has worked in the past. It involves a production expansion of the company’s RO system to 2180.4 m3 (576 000 gallons) a day. The remaining two projects are for systems that use nanofiltration (NF) and RO technologies. One project, which includes two NF trains, will produce up to 735.9 m3 (194 400 gallons) of drinking water each day for a resort located in Central Alaska. The other project will produce 27.3 m3 (7200 gallons) of water per day for use in the processing chain of a food company located in the province of Quebec. PolyCera Membranes completes $9 million Series A funding round

olyCera Membranes, a Water Planet company that develops and markets next-generation membrane technology for industrial wastewater treatment and process separation, has completed a $9 million Series A funding round that will enable it to make immediate investments to enhance its global manufacturing, R&D and sales capabilities.

The firm says that the aim is to meet the target of permanently reducing the cost-base by E200 million by the end of 2020. ‘Our goal is to build a best-in-class speciality chemicals company,’ said Christian Kullmann, the chairman of Evonik’s board of management. ‘To get there we need three things: a balanced portfolio, leading innovative capability and a new, performance-oriented corporate culture. To this end, we are now making a big step forward on the cost side. We want to accelerate decision making and strengthen cost-awareness.’ Polycera Membranes adds Chad Dannemann to its business development team PolyCera Membranes, which develops and markets membrane technology for industrial wastewater treatment and process separation, has hired Chad Dannemann as a business development engineer, as it continues to invest in key staff to support its goal of accelerating growth in important markets around the world. The company says that Dannemann brings more than 20 years of experience in the water industry to his new position, with expertise in water purification and wastewater treatment and reuse. He has been involved in numerous membrane-based water recycling and zero liquid discharge (ZLD) projects, in design, project management and business development capacities. LiqTech makes a change to its board of directors LiqTech International Inc, which develops and provides technologies for gas and liquid purification using ceramic silicon carbide filters, has appointed Mark E. Vernon as the chairman of its board of directors. He succeeds Aldo Petersen who has served as its chairman since August 2011 and has now retired from the board. Vernon joined the firm’s board in May 2013 and has been serving as the Chairman of the Compensation, Nominating and Governance Committees, as well as a member of the Audit Committee. De Nora Ozone and De Nora Water Milan merge On 1 July 2018 De Nora Ozone Srl and De Nora Water Technologies Milan Srl merged into De Nora Water Technologies Italy Srl.
