Chief Scientist UNEP informs scientific community The Office of the Chief Scientist of the United National Environment Programme-UNEP has launched a new website http://www.unep.org/science/chief-scientist, to inform the scientific community about the activities of the office and invite input to its work. The website provides open access to reports and other documents, as well as descriptions of activities regarding global environmental issues. The thread linking of these activities is the aim to promote robust science into policy making and to make scientists more aware of critical policy issues requiring attention. The ‘‘Emissions Gap 2012’’ report http://www.unep.org/pdf/2012gapreport.pdf was a topic of lively discussion at the Doha Climate Summit in December 2012, and the report ‘‘Avoiding Future Famines’’ http://www.unep.org/publications/ebooks/avoidingfamines/portals/19/UNEP_Food_Security_Report. pdf, shows how society is undermining the ecological basis of world food production and suggests possible options for action. While the office of the Chief Scientist already draws on a large global network of scientists, it recognizes that only a tiny fraction of the work of the scientific community finds its way into policy making, even though this work is critically needed to realize a sustainable world. The office encourages you to think about how your work can fit into UNEP activities and invites your feedback by clicking on the ‘‘contact’’ link on the website, or by contributing to the Chief Scientist’s blog. Your views on emerging issues through the ‘‘Get Yourself Heard’’ icon on the website are also welcomed. Scope Secretariat
