New Energy Technologies announces advances in solar window coatings New Energy Technologies Inc, developer of see-through SolarWindow coatings that are made of mostly polymers and can generate electricity on glass and flexible plastics, has announced technical milestones in electricitygenerating coatings during 2014. New Energy Technologies has achieved power production of over 50-times greater than conventional photovoltaic (PV) solar modules when modeled for installation on tall towers, as well as greenhouse gas benefits of over 10-times greater carbon dioxide (CO2) offsets over conventional PV solar modules when modeled for installation on tall towers. SolarWindow is currently under development for eventual commercial deployment in the estimated 80 M detached homes in America and more than 5 M commercial buildings. The technology is the subject of 42 patent filings, and researchers are on track to advance SolarWindow towards the goal of full-scale commercial manufacturability. A number of other milestones are also described. Original Source: New Energy Technologies, 2014. for water storage tanks in Africa to arrest high level water shortages. The protective coatings provide lasting durability and high performance of the storage equipment. Numerous firms with operations in Africa are trying to exploit the huge demand for water storage and quality water tank coatings. For example, Australia’s Heritage Water Tanks has recently been asked by various mining firms in Africa to supply them with firefighting water tanks, commercial size potable water storage tanks and waste water settlement tanks. With the supply order, the company will maintain its position in the continent and also support the growth of the tank coatings market. The 2500 cubic metre Fusion Bonded Epoxy Coated Steel Fire Water Storage Tank from UK’s Balmoral Tanks in North Africa has recently been completed for a world renowned power and gas maker. The Fire Water Tank’s shell, floor and roof use premium Fusion Bonded Epoxy Coating from DuPont. The revenues and sales of Roto Moulders Limited are being increased by exploiting the huge market for water storage acilities. According to the company, production of tanks is now increased to 500 tanks/day in various brands and sizes from 4 tanks/day in 1989. With the rising demand for elevated and ground-level water storage tanks in West Africa, Polytanks Ghana, a member of the Mohinani Group, has recently unveiled a new range of tanks, which can store up to 1000, 2000 and 3000 litres of water and are also available in various colours. SBS Water Systems has recently launched a new production line in South Africa, which allows the company to decrease import expenses and lead times. C O AT I N G S Chinese anti-corrosive market set to improve According to GCiS China Strategic Research, the Chinese market for anticorrosion coatings increased by 2.8% to Yuan 36 bn in 2013, with sales of about 1.4 M tonnes. The slow growth was caused by strong decline in the shipbuilding sector in 2012 and 2013. Jotun, AkzoNobel, Hempel and PPG are some of the foreign market leaders that produce far more revenue compared to their largest domestic competitors. The seven key anticorrosion coating product segments analyzed in the report are polyurethane, epoxy, alkyd, rich zinc primer, acrylic, chlorinated rubber and fluorocarbon. The two largest end-user industries are construction and shipbuilding, which are followed by containers and the petrochemical and chemical industries. Improvement in the market growth is expected to begin in 2014 due to expected demand recovery from the shipbuilding sector.
