Christmas Eve in the Department

From the Emergency Center, William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, MI.

[Ann Emerg Med. 2004;44:662-663.]

’Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house all the creatures were stirring, yes, even the hair louse. The junkies were lined up in triage with care hoping that ‘‘Mr. Morphine’’ would soon get them there. My scrubs were a mess all blood-stained and tattered healing the ills of the sick and sewing lacs from the battered. My eyes are all bloodshot haven’t slept in a week can’t remember when I last peed or had something to eat. The sights, the smells it’s quite a war zone but sadly enough it’s where I’m most at home. The homeless, the sick there’s always a need and if I can help but one, well, that’s something indeed. 0196-0644/$30.00 Copyright Ó 2004 by the American College of Emergency Physicians. doi:10.1016/j.annemergmed.2004.10.017

and the only thing shining is the hand-cuffs abound. But we’ve got a few carolers and singing winos on hand and a few young gangsters. . . unfortunate where bullets do land. So on this great night of holiday cheer here’s a note just to say that I’m glad you’re NOT here. Yet I hope that you’re well and in the company of friends and I will toast to your great health when my shift comes to an end. Merry Christmas! Reprints not available from the author.
