This elegant and well-illustrated book comprises three main sections: the first, which is certainly the most important, is devoted to examination, disease activity, diagnosis, treatment planning and therapy. The second section has been entitled ‘adjunctive care’ and includes problems of aesthetics and treatment of medically compromised patient. The third section discusses the use of implants. Throughout the book, periodontal diseases are divided into two broad categories, the first including all types of gingivitis and adult periodontitis, the second the more aggressive forms of periodontitis. The treatment of the aggressive forms is however only briefly presented. Each chapter is followed by a description of the clinical applications of the material presented and, at the very end, by a ‘quick review’ summarizing the contents. This counterbalances the impression that the text is somewhat too long. I was surprised to read (page 67) that ‘clinical judgement has been greatly enhanced by information obtained from recent research’. In reality, no solid examples can be given of new means of improving diagnosis and prognosis. A better example of longitudinal radiographs than those given in Fig. 4-9a (page 67) could have been chosen. The chapter devoted to therapy gives a detailed overview of various techniques with appropriate emphasis on the classical but still valuable procedure of root planing. Despite these reservations, this is a book which should be on the shelf of every researcher, teacher and clinician in periodontology. G. Cimasoni

The advent of AIDS, development of molecular techniques and marketing of antiviral drugs have revolutionized the practice of clinical virology. Dental virology is fast emerging as a clinical speciality. The publication of this book could not be more timely. The coverage is encyclopedic, from molecular biology through crossinfection control to speculation on viruses and enigmatic orofacial disorders. Part One, encompassing ‘Fundamental Virology’, gives a broad overview of the subject making it a valuable introduction for undergraduates and those new to the field. For clinicians mindful of quality assurance and clinical audit, the section on laboratory diagnosis is a useful guide to the most appropriate tests. Rightly, the main emphasis of the book is on clinical diagnosis and management. The sections describing the herpes viruses and the ever-increasing alphabet of hepatitis viruses are particularly outstanding. A major obstacle to writing a chapter on as rapidly a changing field as AIDS is the speed in which it becomes out of date. Remarkably, the authors have avoided this pitfall. I particularly liked the open design, with the clever use of tables and illustrations allowing easy access to reference material. The only drawback to this excellent book is the price, a pity, since it deserves to be found on more shelves than just those of the reference library. C. L. Pankhurst.
