CO* Laser Surgery. By I. Kaplan and S. Giler. Pp. 206 with 322 illustrations. (Springer-Verlag: Berlin, Heidelberg, New York, Tokyo, 1984.) Price $76.90. This is a beautifully produced but expensive compact volume which has copious illustrations mostly in colour. However, the abundance of illustrations is more than counterbalanced by the paucity of the text which totals 13 pages. All possible uses of the CO2 laser are illustrated but there really is little emphasis on the specific applications for which this expensive machine might be useful. A slightly worrying aspect in a scientific book is that each of the 54 references has the name of the senior author attached. There is no significant discussion on any other make of laser than the Sharplan, for which the volume could act as a very elegant sales brochure rather than a serious scientific work.
