Colloquium Spectroscopicum Internationale XXXIII Presymposium on Sample Introduction in Atomic Spectrometry Zaragoza (Spain) 3–6 September 2003 The Presymposium on Sample Introduction in Atomic Spectrometry: New Strategies was held in Zaragoza, Spain, from September 3 to 6, 2003, as part of the CSI XXXIII which took place in Granada the following week. The Presymposium was organized by the Analytical Spectroscopy and Sensors Group (GEAS) of the University of Zaragoza. The programme of the Presymposium included six invited lectures, two round tables and 14 oral contributions, as well as poster sessions. The topics covered by the conference were: – New developments in nebulization and aerosol transport. – Solid sampling. – Chemical and electrochemical vapor generation. – Electrothermal vaporization and atomization. – Hyphenated techniques. The Presymposium was opened by Juan R. Castillo, chairman of the Organizing Comittee, and Blanca Conde, Vice Rector of the University of Zaragoza. Each session was introduced by an invited lecturer and was followed by oral presentations. Thursday morning was dedicated to nebulization and electrothermal vaporization. The first session was introduced by Jean Michel Mermet, who talked about evaporation and droplet formation in pneumatic nebulization. After the coffee break, Greet de Loos-Vollebregt opened the electrothermal vaporization session discussing the limitations and possibilities of electrothermal vaporization for introduction of solids and slurries in plasmas. ´ The afternoon was devoted to solid sampling. Martın Resano discussed his experiences on solid sampling and ICP-MS and Joe Brenner chaired in his own exciting way a round table about the perspectives of solid sampling in atomic spectrometry. Jean Michel Mermet, Greet de Loos and Ralph Sturgeon contributed with their opinions to answer the controversial question: Why are solid
sampling, laser ablation, slurry introduction, direct sample insertion and electrothermal vaporization not widely used in routine analysis? Ralph Sturgeon was the invited lecturer for the vapor generation session on Friday. He discussed the different modes of vapor generation used for sample introduction in atomic spectrometry, highlighting his recent developments on vapor generation of transition and noble metals. The session dedicated to electrothermal vaporization and atomization was introduced by Paolo Titttarelli, who talked about filter furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. Saturday morning was dedicated to hyphenated techniques. Joe Caruso illustrated to the audience the capabilities of the gas chromatography for separation and introduction of volatile non-metal species to the ICP-MS and Ramon Barnes discussed the use of field-flow fractionation for sample introduction in ICP. The morning was completed with a round table discussion organized ´ Resano and Eduardo Bolea about young sciby Martın entists and sample introduction in atomic spectrometry. The chairman and members of the panel (Frank Van´ were haecke, Jose´ Todolı´ and Juan Marchante-Gayon) less than 35 and they had to tackle with the key question: What lies ahead? The Presymposium ended on Saturday afternoon after an informal lunch and a bullfight, where participants and organizers could test their courage behind the bull ring barrier. The Presymposium became a success thanks to the contributions of the partricipants, the invited lecturers and the efforts of many people. The organizers gratefully acknowledge all of them, as well as the financial support of the sponsors (Thermo Elemental, the University of Zaragoza, the City Council of Zaragoza and the Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology).
