FOCUS stearate SE, which is sold under the brand name Dermorganics GMS-SE. Glyceryl stearate is a naturally sourced emulsifier usually present in certified natural cosmetics. Dermorganics GMS-SE is manufactured using a fully-certified process and offers similar specifications as its non-organic counterparts in the market. Dr Straetmans is forming a new ingredients line under the Dermorganics brand name to meet demand for organic emulsifiers. HPC, Household and Personal Care Today, Sep 2010, (3), 10

Market scope expanded for syntheticalcohol nonionic surfactants Dai-Ichi Kogyo Seiyaku and BASF Japan are expanding the application scope of a series of nonionic surfactants, from the current commercial and industrial applications into the consumer segment of highconcentration, household-use liquid detergents. The eco-friendly surfactants comprise synthetic alcohols with optimized branched hydrophobic groups. They are highly biodegradable and less-toxic to aquatic organisms. Dai-Ichi Kogyo has been manufacturing BASF’s Lutensol series of surfactants and supplying them under the brand name Noigen. These materials effectively lessen dynamic surface tension and exhibit strong wetting and osmotic properties, compared with natural alcohols and other linear-chain alcohols. performance without preservatives. The materials are claimed to allow formulators to emulsify huge quantities of oil with just one component. SPC, Soap, Perfumery and Cosmetics, Sep 2010, 83 (9), 69

Momentive introduces advancements in polyurethanes technology to improve sustainability, energy efficiency At UTECH North America 2010, Momentive Performance Materials showcased a number of technological advancements that can help lower the impact of polyurethane foam products on the environment. Silicone L-6635 is a new surfactant that can reduce surface and sub-surface void formation in rigid polyurethane foams produced by continuous lamination. It can help increase energy efficiency particularly in construction applications, such as structural insulated panels, by eliminating defects at the foam’s surface, the company says. Among other highlighted products were Niax Silicone L-670 (see also p 6) and Niax Silicone L-6952 – a highly efficient surfactant and excellent candidate to consider for use in pourin-place foam applications that employ HFC-245fa as the blowing agent. By providing both good flow and fine cell production, it promotes energy efficiency by leading to the formation of consistent, high quality foams with excellent insulating properties. In addition, Momentive offers a range of surfactants, catalysts and other additives that are excellent candidates to consider when flexible slabstock and moulded foam manufacturers want to meet stringent volatile organic carbon (VOC) emission requirements. ASSOCIATED PRODUCTS New enzyme removes fruit-based stains Novozymes launched a new detergent enzyme solution, XPect, at

the 7th World Conference on Detergents in Montreux, Switzerland. XPect removes fruit- and pectinbased stains that traditional detergent ingredients have trouble removing. Pectin is a natural constituent of many fruits and vegetables and is used as a gelling agent and stabilizer in food production. The classic application is giving the jelly-like consistency to jams or marmalades, but pectin is also gaining popularity as a texturizer in low-fat dairy products. Current detergents are unable to satisfactorily remove stains from fruit- and pectin-based foods such as jams, jellies and processed tomato. XPect is able to degrade the pectin, thereby removing the stains, and as an additional benefit it is efficient even at 20°C, unlike many traditional detergents. Colonial introduces green hydrotropes Colonial Chemical has rolled out two coconut oil-derived hydrotropes called VerdeTrope 120 and VerdeTrope 162, which are suited for use in shampoos, hand soaps and body washes. VerdeTrope 120 does not add foam to the composition, while VerdeTrope 162 imparts minimal foam. The materials are 100% natural and can be used as a substitute to petroleumderived hydrotropes such as sodium cumene sulfonate and sodium xylene sulfonate.
