A 6 station geodetic network was set up at St. Catherine's Point, Isle of Wight, to detect and measure movements of a large landslide complex, The network and field surveying technique are described. Results are analysed in 3 stages: (1) initial manipulation of observations, such as elimination of errors and corrections for temperature and pressure; (2) computation and adjustment, using the variation of coordinates method; and (3) strength analysis, in which precision of the network is obtained with error ellipses.

The fracturometer is a simple device designed to make simultaneous and accurate measurements of the horizontal and vertical distances between bench-marks located on opposite sides of rock fractures. The instrument comprises 2 graduated mobile aluminium bars kept orthogonat by a crossing block. Accuracy of the instrument was tested in the laboratory, using repeated measurements between three stakes, and in the field, by placing 4 series of stakes along 2 fractures of a block slide. There are some problems with vertical accuracy.

The precision of the instruments is discussed, based on available literature. The instruments were tested under controlled conditions to analyse their reliability and examine the parameters affecting in situ measurements. Results are analysed statistically.

Manual monitoring included photogrammetric analysis, inclinometers and piezometers. Due to winter inaccessibility, automated piezometers, inclinometers and extensometers were used. The instruments and the recording apparatus, which uses radiotransmission, are described. Results enabled structure and stability of the landslide to be determined, and efficiency of the remedial measures verified.

The system is demonstrated at an experimental site with instability typical of marl formations. Inclinometers, piezometers and rain gauges are used to collect the data, which are then processed through a computer.

Features of the extensometers and recording apparatus, such as invar wire and reel, sensor, multiplexer and power converter, are described. Reliability of results, with respect to sag of wire and elasticity and friction, is discussed.
