902348 Foundations in punched holes Salnikov, B A; Badeev, A N: Yugai, O K; Dubrovskii, V A; Kovalchuk, P A Soil Mech Found Engng V25, N6. Nor-Dec 1988, P527-531 Deep compaction of slump-prone soils by tamped soil piles has been widely used in the USSR since the 1930s. An improved method of constructing foundations on collapsible soils is described. A hole is punched by a tamping rig acting inside a metal casing, which slides into the ground under its own weight as punching progresses. A reinforcing cage and concrete, or alternatives such as gravel or slag, are added inside the casing, which is then withdrawn, leaving a cast-insitu pile. Results of tests on several types of pile in a type II slump prone soil are illustrated.

902349 Determining the bearing capacity of piles with allowance for the porosity, moisture content, and consistency of clayey soils Kozakov, Y N; Vashko, G V Soil Mech Found Engng V25, N6, Nov-Dec 1988, P535-537 Nomograms are presented linking pile friction and end bearing capacity with depth and liquid limit for soils from the Krasnoyarsk region of the USSR. They are based on statistical analysis of results from 450 static tests on driven piles. Comparisons between chart predictions and field test data are given. 902350 'Geotechnogenic method' of building up foundation bases in type II subsiding soils Bagdasarov, Y A; Chetyrkin, N S; Grachev. Y A Soil Mech Found Engng V25, N6. Not,-Dec 1988, P538-544 A foundation base proposed for use in type II slump prone soils is described. A rigid frame and cell subsoil structure was created by injecting cement/clay slurry at set levels from outlets in a regularly spaced arrangement of boreholes. A foundation slab was installed on the stabilised mass. Initial tests are described, in which settlement was still evident on wetting the subsoil. Reasons for this excessive settlement and possible remedial measures are considered.

902351 Effect of frozen soil swelling on shallow strip foundations of single-story farm houses Kagan, G L Soil Mech Found Engng V25. N6, Nov-Dec 1988. P545-547 The case of a typical 10m square structure on shallow foundations is examined. A model with a variable base rigidity factor and the computer program KORPUS are used in the analysis. Soil swelling pressure and the distribution of forces on the foundations are computed. The stressed state of any structural member can be determined for worst possible design conditions. Analysis confirms the suitability of the shallow strip foundation for single storey structures in cold regions.

Swelling forces grow more smoothly and their reduction is less intensive for group piles as compared to single piles. Group pile effects also reduced surface heave. 902353 Strip foundations in trenches punched by plates using pile drivers Shaevich, V M; Rubin, B I; Krechin, A S; Kurolap, A I Soil Mech Found Engng V25, N6, Nor-Dec 1988. P554-558 Strip foundations have been constructed in trenches formed by punching using elongated plates impacted by standard pile driving equipment. Expanded bases may be made by tamping crushed stone in the bottom of the trenches. Results of tests on these foundations in type I slump prone soil, including simulated seismic loading, are described. Considerable cost savings are possible when compared to standard pile foundations. 902354 Analysis of a beam on random elastic support Baker, R; Zeitoun, D G; Uzan, J Soils Found 1/29, N2. June 1989. P24-36 The classical beam on elastic (Winkler type) support model is widely applied in geomechanics. Because of the variability of natural soils and incomplete site data, the form of the distribution of subgrade reaction along the beam is uncertain, and in analysis it is considered as a random function of the space coordinate along the beam. An analysis using this concept is presented, which determines probability distribution of settlements, differential settlements, shear forces and moments along the beam, and allows complete probabilistic design of such beams. 902355 Analysis of bearing capacity for log-spiral sliding surfaces Narita, K; Yamaguchi, H Soils Found 1/29. N2, June 1989. P85-98 An analytical method of predicting bearing capacity is presented which assumes a single log-spiral failure surface beneath the foundation. Advantages of the method are examined. It can be easily adapted for eccentric or inclined loading or deep foundations. Numerical results using this method are compared with those of other theoretical and empirical formulae and with field results. 902356 Computer design and analysis of pile caps and spread footings San Juan, G M Proc Symposium on Computer Aided Design and Monitoring in Geotechnical Engineering, Bangkok, 3-6 December 1986 P532-546. Publ Bangkok: AIT, 1986 A rational program for pile cap and spread footing analysis is presented. Footings may be designed for any service load soil pressure, service load capacity, or pile spacing. It can analyse pile caps for as-driven pile locations for up to 100 piles. It can handle asymmetrical cases. The method of solution, preparation of input data, and output data are described. Applications are illustrated.

902357 Prediction of horizontal behaviour of pier foundations Yoshii, Y; Uto, K; Takauchi, M; Seno, Y Proc Symposium on Computer Aided Design and Monitoring in Geotechnicai Engineering, Bangkok, 3-6 December 1986 P547-561. Publ Bangkok: AIT, 1986

Field measurements of shear forces from swelling of frozen soils were made during two winters on specially designed and instrumented sectional piles in clayey and loamy soil and sandy soil. Greater forces were seen with lower temperatures.

To increase the understanding of the behaviour of tower foundations on slopes, full scale horizontal load tests were carried out on pile foundations on slopes of clayey sand over sand, sand over silty sand, and loam over weathered tuff breccia.
