Petroleum, PCB and organochlorine concentrations were measured in mussels, oysters and clams. Some chlorinated biocides such as DDT and endrin were contributed by river discharge, but the remaining compounds appeared to originate from multi-point coastal sources. Levels of PCB and petroleum were relatively high. Bodega Mar. Lab., Univ. of California, Bodega Bay, Calif. 94923, USA. (mjj) 83:6851 Stirling, Ian and Wendy Calvert, 1983. Environmental threats to marine mammals in the Canadian Arctic. Polar Rec., 21(134):433-449.

General biology and the ecological requirements of whales, seals, walruses, polar bears and arctic foxes are discussed. Major human impacts such as overharvesting and industrial activity are considered. More and improved baseline studies, especially in 'vulnerable' areas, are crucial to competent assessment of the effects of human activities on the Arctic's mammals that depend upon the sea for survival. Several different multivariate methods which have been, or could be, useful in pollution studies are referenced and described briefly. Basic texts and useful statistical computer program packages are listed. Univ. of Goteborg, Dept. of Zool,, P.O. Box 250 59, S-400 31 Goteborg, Sweden. (mjj)

Analysis of cloud-free images covering the year 1979 showed that distribution of chlorophyll-like pigments was a good indicator of oceanic front seasonal variations. Coastal upwellings, cyclonic eddies, and the Rhone River plume could be detected. Scripps Inst. of Oceanogr., La Jolla, Calif. 92093, USA. (mwf) 83:6854 Danielsson, L.-G. and Stig Westerlund, 1983. Clean room container laboratory for the Ymer 80 [expedition]. Ocean Sci. Engng, 8(1):53-61.

The construction of a contamination-free container laboratory aboard a large icebreaker is discussed. Designed for trace metal analysis, the facility included special wall and floor coverings, positive pressure and clean water supplied via reverse osmosis and ion exchange purification. Small, low-priced computers and software that are now or soon will be available for scientific work are discussed as to background technological development, projected capabilities of desktop models, innovative uses, etc. Natl.
