Networking development systems A package from Intel - NDS-1 now allows a network of up to eight Intellec development systems to share central hard disc storage (40 Mbyte maximum) and printer. Such a network allows individual satellite Intellecs to be used as dedicated hardware or software development stations enabling various system parts to be developed simultaneously and integrated later. This should reduce project development time and provide increased online bulk storage capacity and faster data access (which can be a considerable advantage for large assemblies and compilations). The network can be built up using existing development systems as satellite stations: all Intellec models may be used, including older MDS 800 units, with an interface card which fits into the back of each unit and provides high speed parallel communication. These work stations can be located up to 6 m apart and communications between the workstations, the hard disc and the printer are controlled by the network manager (D5291). This system controller is made up of an MDS226 development system, MDS271 hard disc and MDS590 interconnect board and runs the operating software. This software,

developed by Intel Santa Clara, is based on the RMX-80 multitasking operating system. It allows users to access files on the hard disc (though some files, classified 'private' rather than 'public', are restricted to authorized access only) and to share its data. There are three main parts to the operating system software:

communications manager - monitoring the workstations and transferring file action requests to and responses from the message manager • file manager - creates, reads, writes and deletes disc files • message manager - residing between communication and file managers and maintaining a table of logged-on users, validations, file action requests and directing them as required, responding to interface requests etc. The network development system is stocked by Rapid Recall in the UK and is available at £15 304 for DS291 with 7½ Mbyte hard disc. (Upgrade kits enabling existing Intellecs to be used as the system controller are available at less than half this price.) The per unit cost for the satellite systems is around £2000. New extensions to aid design, development and troubleshooting in the HP 64000 microprocessor development system have been announced. Available now is the 64005S emulation terminal system which gives real-time flexible emulation to 64000 users. A series of new PASCAL compilers and real-time emulators will be introduced within the next six to twelve months. These units are designed to support a variety of microprocessors, including single chip and 16-bit types. The compilers will be identical to existing HP 64000 system compilers and the 8- and 16-bit emulators will be identical to existing HP 64000 system emulators. The compilers and emulators are available for Motorola 6802, 6809, and 68000; Zilog Z8001 and Z8002; and Intel 8086 and 8088. A PASCAL compiler for the Motorola 6800, to accompany an existing 6800 emulator, and an emulator for the Intel 8048 will also be available. The 16-bit emulator will let the user replace the microprocessor in the system with an emulator probe. The probe and associated circuitry not only emulate the microprocessor but also provide debug and analysis tools for system development. Other features include real-time speed with no wait states inserted at a maximum clock rate of 8 MHz for the 6800 and 8086, 5 MHz for the 8088 and 6 MHz for the Z8000s. Memory mapping can be carried out in blocks of 256 byte over an address space of 1 Mbyte, or of 4 kbyte over an address space of 16 Mbyte. Map selection is software-controlled and memory may be assigned over the entire 16 Mbyte address system. Time saving debugging analysis and simulation features are also provided.
