hilst the centrifugal pump continues to be the workhorse of industry, recent developments are significantly improving its reliability and energy efficiency. The UK Institute of Mechanical Engineers is running a one day international seminar entitled, Centrifugal Pumps - State of the Art and New Opportunities, in mid May. This event will highlight the latest advances in design, manufacture and monitoring which are leading to a much more cost-effective machine. The challenge for the day will be set by suggestions of current costs of unreliability and low energy efficiency being unacceptable to the user, followed by presentations from various companies from the UK, USA and Germany specialising in problem solving and design for manufacture.

It is already clear, say the organisers, that the 16th Pollutec Exhibition of equipment, technology and services will be a success. Over 2000 exhibiting companies (from thirty countries) and 60 000 trade visitors are expected. According to a survey carried out at the show in 1998, 36% of visitors come to Pollutec in order to plan for

an investment, 50% to discover new products and 51% to find new suppliers. Next October, the event will occupy 80 000 m 2 of space and will display the latest innovations in plant, equipment and services in the various fields of the environment: water, waste, recycling, air, noise, energy, soil rehabilitation, clean technologies, analysis/measurement/monitoring,industrial cleaning. Some twenty meetings covering a wide range of subjects are also scheduled. The venue for the 13th Offshore South East Asia Exhibition and Conference, OSEA 2000, has been changed and the event will now run at the new Singapore Expo exhibition centre in Singapore. The show dates will remain unchanged at 28 November - 1 December and will include RLPAsia 2000, the 5 th Asian International Refining, LNG & Petrochemical Technology Exhibition & Conference. The new exhibition and conference venue, in June last year, provides 60 000 m 2 of exhibition space and conference facilities for 1200 delegates, making it the largest and most modern facility of its kind in South East Asia. •
