D. Submarine Geology and Geophysics

Accumulation rates and chemical compositions of material collected in particle interceptor traps (PIT's) compared favorably with the naturallycalibrated laminated and preserved bottom sediments of 3 California basins; the PIT design appears to collect a representative sample and provide a good estimate of particle flux. Determinations of sediment flux and composition were similar for 4 traps of radically different design: paired cones, folding box, cylinder, closing box. These are encouraging results for directly measuring oceanic particulate flux. Oregon State Univ., Corvallis, Oreg. 97331, USA. (dme) 81:6~6 Flinn, E.A., 1981. Aplflleatinn of ~ tedtmflogy to ~ ¢ s . Classical geodetic methods are insufficiently accurate to measure tectonic plate movement and deformation, in addition to being impractical and prohibitively expensive at the level of detail required. Long-baseline microwave int, rferometry and laser ranging to satellites are two space-based techniques which show promise of attaining movement measurement accuracies within 2-3 cm in the very near future. Coordinated national and international research programs are underway to study polar motion, plate movements, Earth rotation, crustal deformation, etc. NASA, Geodynamics Program, Washington, D.C. 20546, USA. Tectonism, volcanism, glaciation, and sedimentation have shaped the shelf morphology of the Ross Sea. Seafloor provinces are described geologically, geophysically, hydro-glaciologicatly and sedimentologically. Some plate reconstruction models are discussed. A relatively small self-contained sediment trap with a timed closing system was deployed in Dabob Bay, Washington, for 1 yr. An in-situ calibration was obtained by comparin$ the capture and retention of unsupported 2z°Pb by the traps with the steady state accumulation rate of unsupported 21°Pb in the
