NEWS undoubtedly risky but the rewards can be amazing, says Plimsoll. Average growth at these companies is about 22%, compared with the industry average of 1.5%. Among the companies of note are Aerosol Technique Lindal (UK) Ltd and Alcatel Vacuum Technology (UK) Ltd. The average margin in the UK fluid handling equipment industry is a woeful 2.5%, finds Plimsoll. Yet, 50 companies categorized as the ‘Most Profitable’ have attained an average margin of about 17%. Companies of note include Tyco Valves Ltd, Rotork Controls Ltd and Duco Ltd. The amount of sales per employee is a classic efficiency ratio. The average figure in this industry is UK£92 000 per employee, and the 50 companies named as ‘Leaders in Efficiency’ are beating this figure by posting an average UK£269 000 per employee. Among those enterprise included in this facet of the awards are Perfect-Valois UK Ltd, Aqua-Gas AVK Ltd and Seepex UK Ltd. An ‘Envy Awards 2002’ pack is available free of charge with purchase of the ‘Plimsoll Portfolio Analysis of 1000 Companies in the UK Fluid Handling Equipment Industry’. Bellows seals meet API specifications With high-performance features including an edge-welded bellows plate design, John Crane of Morton Grove, Illinois, USA, says that its Types 1604, 1670, 2609 and 3609 Sealol metal bellows seals meet, or exceed, American Petroleum Institute (API) 682 specifications. These units are pressure-balanced, have precisely controlled spring loads, and contain all-static secondary seals. In addition, the bellows plate design uses a 45° tilt angle, which moves stress away from the inner diameter welds of the bellows plates, increasing service life and reliability. This unique tilt angle, coupled with a three-sweep radius and a nesting ripple plate design, gives uniform stress distribution and core rigidity to the bellows. The design enables the seals to disperse the stress that can lead to bellows weld fatigue. The Types 604, 670 and 609, which form the basis of these APIqualified seals, are designed to help plant operators lengthen the mean time between planned maintenance, says the company. They form the heart of its Type B and Type C seal arrangements and have been designed and qualification-tested in accordance with API 682 specifications. Types 1604, 2609 and 3609 are non-elastomer high-temperature seals that use a flexible graphite secondary seal. These can operate reliably at temperatures up to 425°C. The bellows are made of Inconel Alloy 718. Type 1604 is a single, stationary bellows cartridge seal, Type C, Arrangement 1. It is available with a segmented carbon throttle bushing for effective containment, retained mating ring for vacuum service, and steam deflector. Types 2609 and 3609 are dual unpressurized and pressurized rotating bellows seals, Type C, Arrangements 2 and 3. These cartridge seals come equipped with optimal flow pumping ring and the capability to withstand reverse pressurization.
The Type 1670 is a low-temperature rotating bellows cartridge seal, Type B, Arrangement 1. Its bellows has an all alloy C-276 construction, and its strength and corrosion resistance make it appropriate for aggressive environments where chemicals, acids and caustics are found. The Type 1670 is available with a distributed flush that optimizes circulation of liquid at the seal faces and a segmented carbon bushing. Waterproof epoxy launched In the USA, Super Glue Corp and its parent company Pacer Technology have unveiled an easy-to-measure, waterproof epoxy adhesive that is designed to be used by the automotive industry. The Anchor-Tite epoxy system is a two-part industrial strength adhesive made to be used on any part of a vehicle, including aluminium, plastic, rubber and steel surfaces. It is packaged in a pre-measured applicator and, according to Pacer has 30% flexibility, compared with standard epoxies that have less than 5%. The automotive adhesive is one of six in the Anchor-Tite product lines being introduced. Other versions of the product include landscape and plumbing, household, pool and spa, marine, and sports and field varieties. Not only is Anchor-Tite easy to use, claims the company, but it also works in contact with, or under water, and at different temperatures. Its benefits include a strong steel-to-steel bond, resistance to shrinking and expansion, extended time (one hour) to set parts and a setting time of less than four hours (full cure in 24 hours). Each of the six lines cures in a different colour. The automotive line cures in black. Pacer Technology is a manufacturing, packaging and distribution
company that markets advanced technology adhesives, sealants and other related products to consumer markets worldwide. For more information, contact: Pacer Technology, 9420 Santa Anita Avenue, Rancho Cucamonga, CA 91730, USA. Tel: +1 909 987 0550, Fax: +1 909 987 0490.
Distrupol distributes Polimeri’s elastomer Distrupol has become the sole distributor of Polimeri Europa UK’s synthetic elastomer products. Distrupol says that the Polimeri Europa deal is the latest in a series of recent distribution agreements that it has won, further extending its already extensive supply portfolio. In line with the company’s growth strategy, and its ‘one-stop shop’ objective, the latest additions include the commodity range of styrene butadiene rubber, carbon black masterbatch and polybutadiene, the thermoplastic rubber range based on styrene butadiene styrene and styrene-isoprene-styrene, as well as the speciality elastomers range comprising Dutral ethylene propylene copolymer and terpolymer, Butaclor polychloroprene, Europrene N nitrilebutadiene rubber (NBR) and NBR-polyvinyl chloride. Absorbing EniChem’s main businesses at the beginning of the 2002, Polimeri Europa is one of the world’s major producers of elastomers, and it has dedicated plants in Italy, France, the UK and USA. These materials are used in a broad range of applications including automotive components and gaskets, adhesives, electrical cables, and as modifiers for plastics and additives for lubricants.
