BUSINESS NEWS Ciba opens first DPP pigments plant in USA Ciba Specialty Chemicals has offtcially opened its new $50 million pigments plant in Newport, Delaware, USA - the only plant in the USA to manufacture diketo pyrrolo pyrrol (DPP) pigments. Completion of the plant, said Jean Schaefle, Pigments Division President, is one phase of preparation for the 2 1st century. The design of the plant is based on an existing facility in Monthey, Switzerland, which has been operating for five years, with some modifications to improve efficiencies. Production of DPP in the USA improves Ciba’s global supply capability for these highperformance pigments, which are characterized by a combination of excellent colouristic properties and durability, leading to growing demand for them in plastics, automotive coatings and related applications. The official opening of the DPP plant also marks a key element of Phenix Project - an effort to modernize the manufacturing capabilities at the entire Newport facility. Another stage (currently awaiting approval) will bring up to date the quinacridone $gment manufacturing. DuPont presses for a second TiO, price increase Prices of titanium dioxide in Europe were increased by DM 0.30/kg (or its equivalent in local currencies) by DuPont, from July 1 the second price increase since the beginning of 1997. The company, which is marketleader in titanium dioxide, with the brandname Ti-Pure, said that the move was necessary due to the ‘large erosion’ in prices that occurred in 1996.

Dave Young, European Marketing Manager for White Pigments, said that strong demand and tight supply in 1997 was forcing the company to re-examine additions to local capacity - but at current prices the investment required could not be justified. Moreover, he added, raw materials costs continue to rise. Great Lakes partners in Saudi stabilizer venture The first polymer stabilizer joint venture in the Middle East will be built at the Al Jubaial industrial complex in Saudi Arabia, following an agreement between Great Lakes Chemical Corporation and the Hamed A Al Zamil and Brothers Group, a leading Saudi industrial company. Representing the next logical step by Great Lakes in establishing its presence in the world’s key markets for polymer stabilizers, the plant will produce phenolic and phosphite antioxidants. Great Lakes currently manufactures and has applications research centres in North America, Europe and Asia. Taiwan investment strengthens Degussa in global silica Capacity for production of precipitated silicas in Taiwan will be increased by 30% by Degussa AG, further strengthening the position of the company as the leading world manufacturer - and also emphasizing the strategic importance of the Taiwan site. The plant, under the name United Silica Industrial Ltd (USIL), is currently active in production of silicas and zeolites for the rubber 6

and detergents industries. The parent company notes that, with this commitment, it is responding to the constantly growing demand for reinforcing silicas from the rubber industry in the region. In addition, special types for use in silicone rubber and paint will be added to the USIL range. The project is part of a global expansion, in which Degussa is expanding silica capacities at the USA plants at Mobile and Chester by some 50%. The group has 11 production sites worldwide and total silica capacity of about 300 000 tonnes/year. l
In an unrelated move, Degussa has added to its worldwide carbon black capability by exercising its right to buy out the remaining shareholding in the Portuguese producer Carbogal, in which it has been a long-time minority shareholder. The company manufactures industrial carbon blacks and has a capacity of 35 000 tonnes/year, using Degussa technology under license.
