Etiology, pathogenesis, phases of wound processes make it necessary to differentiate the selection of medicinal remedy for local treatment of suppurative wounds. The preparation used for treatment of suppurative wounds should render a complex many-sided effect. In connection with this fact we worked out a new applicational sorbent on the basis of absorbed material, nitron-immobilized by antibiotics. It provides the combination of antimicrobic activity with adsorbent properties. It was found out, the received material effectively drains wounds, makes a significant influence on the inhibition of microbes’ expansion, it continuously purities wound, adsorbing the exudation along with germs, toxins and agents of inflamation. As a result, the substances, which slow the healing down of injuring wound are continuously removed. Thus, the medicinal effect of the new fibrous germicide stipulates by its germstatic influence on pathogen microflora with simultaneous purilication of affection zone by absorbability of toxins and absorption of wound exudation. The use of this preparation makes it possible to cut the period of wound purification.

The role of EGF (epidermal growth factor) microemulsion (ME) formulation on the stress ulcer healing were studied with malonndialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione (GSH). Thirty female Wistar rats weighing 180-2308 were divided into 3 groups namely microemulsion with EGF (6ug/kg/d, i.g., 7 days), ME (i.g.,7 days) and control without treatment and exposed to cold and immobilisation stress. The mean ulcer area of the EGF-treated group (1.15 mm2) was significantly lower when compared to ME group (9.09 mm2, p=O.OOOS)and control group (11.03 mm2, p=O.O003). The gastric MDA levels were found to be significantly lower in the EGF-treated group (85.15rtl3.91 nmolig) compared to ME group (144.78k10.78 nmolig) and control group 192.74 + 9.25 nmol/g). However there were no significant changes in the gastric GSH levels of all groups. While the gastric MDA levels were found to be positively correlated with ulcer area, GSH levels were negatively correlated with ulcer area. It is concluded that EGF microemulsion formulation has important effect on healing of stress ulceration of gastric mucosa and this effect may partly be related with a decrease in gastric MDA levels. this study was supported by Turkish Scientl$c and Technical Research Council cTUR~AK-.~BAG-AYD-181)

TURKEY The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of widely consumed oils on lipid peroxidation in the liver. The study was performed on 150 healthy one-day old Avian Farms chicks. Chicks were divided into five groups randomly and fed butter (group l), margarine (group 2), sunflower oil (group 3), olive oil (group 4) and corn oil (group 5) for a period of 45 days in a percentage of 5% (w/w) for the second and third weeks, 6% for the fourth and fifth weeks and 7% for the seventh and eighth weeks.. At the end that period chicks were fasted for 16 hours and sacrified, completely bled and decapitated. Their livers were excised and homogenized in KCl. Gamma glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) and lipid peroxidation (in terms of MDA) of homogenates were estimated. MDA was lowest in the butter group, highest in the corn oil group and intermediate in the olive oil group. The differences were significant on ANOVA basis. Our results clearly indicate that dietary saturated oils are resistant to lipid peroxidation whereas unsaturated oils induce an oxidative stress which is a significant risk factor for many diseases. Also, among vegetable oils, olive oil seems to be the most resistant one against lipid peroxidation. GGT activity was lowest in the margarine group. This is an interesting result. Since, GGT is predominantly located in the cell membrane and may act to transport amino acids and peptides into the cell. Thus, it can be speculated that margarine adversly effect membrane structure. The underlying mechanism of this alteration is not known and needs to be investigated.

Ebselen is a selenoorganic compound with antimflammatory properties that are related to its glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx)-like activity and eventually to its peroxynitrite scavenger effect. These properties have been tested in an experimental model of endotoxin-induced uveitis (EIU): intravitreal injection of endotoxin to the rat eye. We first detected a decrease of glutathione (GSH) content and GSHPx activity, associated with an increase of malondialdehyde (MDA) in the whole rat eye after endotoxin injection. We tested the pharmacological distribution of ebselen and its presence in the eye of control rats by means of its chromatographic detection. The increase of the overall GSHPx activity in the eye homogenate is clearly accounted for by the GSHPx-like activity measured in the neutralized supernatant of the acidified homogenate, which might not only depend on ebselen but also on some of its metabolites also present in the rat eye. Oral treatment of rats with ebselen reverts the inflammatory signs and normalizes GSH and MDA contents and GSHPx activity.
