EXCHANGE: A RESPONSE TO BEYER’S REJOINDER IN LQ, 10:4 Robert J. House* University of Pennsylvania

Janice Beyer, in her rejoinder in LQ, 10:4, states that she is disappointed that I have not continued research on charismatic leadership. On the contrary, Phase 2 of the GLOBE program, in which I have been actively involved since 1995, includes measurement of culturally endorsed implicit theories of leadership (CLTs). One dimension of the CLTs is value based/charismatic leadership. This dimension was universally endorsed as enhancing leader effectiveness in all the 62 cultures sampled, with mean aggregated ratings for each culture greater than six on a seven point scale. The article by den Hartog et al. (LQ, 1999, 10:2, pp. 219–256) reports this information. The next phase of GLOBE will test for the universality of the CLT dimensions as effective global leader behavior patterns. It will also assess the effects of several potential moderators of relationships between value based/charismatic leadership of CEOs and the competitive performance of the firms they manage. Also, what I said about Ghandi, Mother Teresa, and Mandela was misinterpreted. As I stated in my commentary, preceding Beyer’s rejoinder, I regard them as “quiet non-macho charismatics” and truly extraordinary.
