93A 843109 Assessment of the effect of seismic disturbance on the natural environment (In Polish) Dubinski, J; Gerlach, Z Przegl Gorn V39, N3, March 1983, P135-142 A new method for the assessment of seismic disturbances is presented based on the analysis of data obtained from microseismic observations. Quantitative relationships are determined which make it possible to ascribe to every dynamic seismic phenomenon occurring within the rock mass a value for the degree of intensity of vibration at any distance from its epicentre. The assessment is based on quantitative and qualitative relations between the intensity of vibrations caused by the seismic event and the value of its effects on various aspects of the natural environment.

Six tests were performed at the Nova Avanhandava dam site, Sao Paulo, Brazil and the results compared with results from hydraulic conductivity tests performed on three types of rock fractures with varying surface roughness. The concept of "equivalent opening' is introduced for flow prediction and analysis.

Balkema. 1983 Successful reduction in groundwater pressure can only be achieved with knowledge of groundwater conditions, piezometric measurements and associated measuring systems. Three examples of groundwater effects are briefly presented: slope instability at Disentis caused by dammed up water, an increase in fissuring at the Pradella hydro-electric power plant and an extreme increase in rock pressure in the Isla Beila Tunnel, Rothenbrunnen. In each case boreholes successfully relieved the pressure. A brief review of the effect of permeability on a number of measuring systems is also presented.
