Fast colour A four-colour dot-matrix printer/ plotter, with separate cartridge ribbons and print heads for each primary colour plus black, has been announced by Ramtek. The unit produces full colour or black and white hardcopy graphics on plain paper and complements Ramtek's colour graphics and display system product lines. The Model 4100 is Z80 microprocessor controlled, can be switched quickly between graphics and alphanumerics and operates at approximately three times the speed of present colour impact printer/plotters, printing all colours in ~ single pass. The 4100 prints in a subtractive process, light colours first, from a raster refresh graphics system. Current maximum resolution is 60 dots/ linear in, horizontal or vertical. Plotting speed in the full colour graphics mode averages 3min/page for 11 in forms. Characters are printed in a

5 x 7 dot matrix at a rate of 60 lines/ min. The 4100 will cost $12,000 in the USA and deliveries will begin in August with production quantities available in November. OEM discounts are available.

It is half the size and weight of its forerunner, has much simpler paper and toning loading, is quieter and requires no calibration or adjustment. It is also a lot less expensive to buy. At £4750, including one year's full warranty, the V-80 is about 35% cheaper than the Model 1200A it replaces. Discounts, even in small OEM quantities, can be substantial and represent a 60% OEM price reduction from earlier Versatec models. (Versatec,

The Versatec V-80, an electrostatic printer/plotter claimed to be the world's fastest mid-priced printer, prints 1000 132-column lines/min, more than three times faster than comparably priced impact printers. It can plot an 11 in x 8½1n area with 200 dot/in resolution in 7s. With optional controller, it can produce a hardcopy from CRT or video source in 20s or less. The V-80 is the result of a threeyear Versatec/Xerox development project begun in mid-1977.
