Evonik introduces new pigment compatibilizer and wetting agent for coating applications Evonik has introduced Tego Color Aid, a surfactant-based compatibilizer that benefits both organic and inorganic pigments in alkyd resin coating applications. Most universal pastes work well in a wide variety of coating systems but alkyd resin coatings remain a challenge: pigments cannot be readily stabilized in the binder, resulting in uneven colour intensity. The new Tego Color Aid can be added to formulations to increase compatibility between the pigment concentrate and the binder. As an additive in the coating base, the compatibilizer can force water out of the pigment concentrate once the latter has been added. It allows the full effect of the dispersion additive in the pigment concentrate to develop, stabilizing the pigments in the coating base and thus optimizing the absorption of the colour paste and the distribution of colour. With Tego Color Aid technology, the properties of the finished coating remain virtually untouched. The amount needed is very small relative to existing compatibilizers. The new product is an amino amide surfactant, the structure of which has been designed to have only a slight impact on the drying time of the coating. Colour values likewise remain constant and do not need to be adjusted. As such, the yellowing process remains unaffected. The additional costs of the compatibilizer barely register, given that such a tiny amount is necessary and the technology is only used precisely where it is needed: in the alkyd resin system. The use of Tego Color Aid can also reduce the cost of developing or updating universal pastes. With the development of Tego Color Aid, Evonik expands its portfolio with a product that reduces the complexity of developing new formulations, thereby relieving customers of some of their work. The new compatibilizer was unveiled at the European Coatings Show held in Nuremberg, Germany, from 4-6 Apr 2017, where Evonik also introduced new Airase antifoam and Surfynol wetting agent products for use in foodcontact packaging. These products were originally developed by the former Performance Materials Division of Air Products, which Evonik recently acquired ['Focus on Surfactants', Mar 2017]. Surfynol 355 surfactant is a proprietary wetting agent designed to provide dynamic wetting without generating excess foam in water-based pigment dispersions, inks, overprint varnishes, adhesives and coatings. Thanks to its 'unique chemical properties', this product yields optimum results, even on difficult-to-wet substrates such as lithographic inks and silicone release liners, without contributing to excessive foam formation, according to Evonik. The new defoamers comprise siloxanebased Airase 5355 and Airase 5655 and oil-based Airase 4655. All three were developed specifically for use in food-packaging applications; they contain no added mineral oils, hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) or alkyl phenol ethoxylates (APEs), and are suitable for low-VOC formulations. All of the new food-packaging additives offer 'broad applicability and exceptional performance' in many different food contact end-use applications, Evonik says. All can be used in compliance with the complex mix of regional and national regulatory requirements in numerous countries, including the USA (FDA 21CFR 175.105, 176.170, 176.180, etc.), Switzerland (Swiss Ordinance, Annex 10, Part A), Japan (not on the negative list for printing inks) and China (GB9685-2016). Other regulations may also apply, depending on the application. Surfynol 355 surfactant and Airase 4655 defoamer, for instance, meet the stipulations of the European Union's plastics directive (PIM EU 10/2011) and the recommendations of the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR, Recommendation XIV & XXXVI). This ensures that packaging processed with either of these Airase or Surfynol food-contact-compliant products can be used safely throughout the world. ASSOCIATED PRODUCTS Evonik launches rheology modifier for cleansing formulations: Antil 500 Pellets Evonik has introduced Antil 500 Pellets, a novel and versatile rheology modifier for various cleansing formulations. As an innovative hydrophilic polymer, Antil 500 Pellets enables a significant reduction of the active surfactant level in standard cleansing formulations. In addition, the high efficiency and flexibility of Antil 500 Pellets facilitates the thickening of challenging surfactant systems, such as sulfate-free formulas, effectively supporting the trend for milder cleansing in personal care. The 100% active, preservative-free solid is clearly soluble in water and processable at room temperature. Furthermore, Antil 500 Pellets is stable against hydrolysis and effective over a wide pH range. The thickening agent provides a rich formulation texture with Newtonian flow behaviour but without changing the foaming characteristics, which is essential for fulfilling the consumers' sensorial expectations of personal cleansing products. Antil 500 Pellets is recommended for the development of mild and cost-effective surfactantbased skin and hair care formulations. The new rheology modifier was among the products launched by Evonik at in-cosmetics 2017 in London, UK, in Apr. The company's Personal Care Business Line also unveiled tetrapeptide Tego Pep 4-Comfort, an active ingredient that helps to reduce skin irritations such as redness and itching, caused by stimuli such as heat, sunlight or shaving. The Silica Business Line presented Aerosil R 816, which, thanks to its unique surface modifications, can be used for stabilizing Pickering emulsions. The additive gives formulators the ability to convert a broad array of highly varied emollients to PEG- and silicone-free emulsions. It also provides an easy means of monitoring emulsion rheology, the company says.
