Denmark, France, Great Britain, Italy, Japan, Norway, Austria, Sweden, Switzerland, USSR and the USA. The meeting which was the seventh annual conference of the association expressed concern over the effects of inflation on long term coverage against risk. It also considered the overlapping of fire and machinery insurance. The next annual conference is to be held in Florence, Italy in 1975. Hollywood

Eddy-current launch in Far West An airline inspection manager introduced a British commercial development in aircraft inspection at a symposium in Seattle, Washington, USA. The manager, E. Pantazoglou of Olympic Airways, discussed the application of the Alcoprobe, an eddy-current device, in a contribution on his company's procedures to measure corrosion of aircraft skins. The symposium on aircraft corrosion was organized by the Boeing Commercial Airplane Company. The AIcoprobe was developed by Inspection Instruments ( N D T ) i n collaboration with British Airways and the instrument is now generally available (Fig.l). It is designed to measure thickness of non-ferrous metals: up to 8 mm of aluminium or- an equivalent thickness of other metals. It is claimed th~lt a reduction of as little as 2% can be detected. The instrument induces eric]y-currents into the skirl and the phase relationship between the driving and induced currents is detected and displayed. The instrument must be calibrated for each test material. The instrument has an on-off switch and a selection of four frequencies 0.5, 1, 2 and 7 kHz, that is in the range 0.1 - 10 kHz most suitable for aircraft skins between 1 - 1 2 mm thick. There is a lift-off adjustment for up to 0.4 mm separation of the probe from the surface for paint or protective coating. There

The display is an analogue dial showing percentage calibrated depth. There is also an output to drive various meters or an oscilloscope to check the parameters. There is an audio warning. The instrument measures 150 x 210 x 290 mm and weighs 2.2 kg. It is powered by a 12 V battery of HP2 dry cells. Inspection Instruments(NDT) Ltd, 32 Duncan Terrace, London N1 8BR, UK

can be used with wet or dry methods. It is based on the principle that iron particles and iron test pieces are much the same colour and a bit of contrast helps. It is non-inflammable and does not make magnetic-particle testing less sensitive. It is designated 9-WCP and can be bought in a spray can which is so much handier to write your name on blank walls.
