DIVIDENDS
• About 30 pump specialists from German power plant operators and plant engineering contractors met with KSB AG experts on 4 May for a symposium in Frankenthal to discuss the latest pump engineering developments. Key topics included boiler feed and circulating pumps, as well as cooling water pumps for fossil-fuelled power stations. The cold and warm start capabilities of various pump types were also discussed. KSB presented its latest scrubber pump generation with newly developed ceramic lining. The cooling water pump presentation gave attendees a chance to see the largest pumps ever built by KSB. Weighing about 130 metric tons each, these pump units are intended for cooling water supply in the Yuhuan power station in China. One of the pumps is currently in the final assembly stage. • Flowserve Corp has set up an award with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), memorialising longtime Flowserve employee and pump technology expert Dr Sankaraiyer Gopalakrishnan who died last year. The biennial Sankaraiyer GopalakrishnanFlowserve Pump Technology Award will recognise a mechanical engineer for achievement in mechanical pump technology with a financial prize. Gopalakrishnan, who last served as vice president of technology at Flowserve Pumps, was elected ASME Fellow in 1995 and received the ASME Fluid Machinery Design Award in 2001. His technological innovations while at Flowserve included an advanced primary coolant for nuclear reactors, a longlife nuclear seal and a highefficiency expander for cryogenic services.

USFILTER INTEGRATED INTO SIEMENS WATER TECHNOLOGIES USFilter is now officially known in the marketplace as Siemens Water Technologies. The integration of USFilter into the Water Technologies division of the Siemens’ Industrial Solutions and Services (I&S) group completes a transition period that started just over two years ago when Siemens acquired USFilter from Veolia Environnement. Water Technologies - the new I&S division - is headquartered in Warrendale, Pennsylvania, and supplies water treatment and purification systems for drinking water, wastewater and process water with a broad portfolio of products and services. The company has a strong position and growth record in North America, and is moving aggressively into Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and Latin America. “The name change marks a new and exciting era for our company,” said Dr Roger Radke, president and CEO of Siemens Water Technologies. “Not only are we fully integrated, but we have successfully re-organised our business segments around customer needs and have successfully launched our water treatment business worldwide through the Siemens global network of sales and regional offices.” The identities of the former USFilter product families and names have been retained. These include established names such as Envirex, Memcor, Zimpro, Wallace & Tiernan, OSEC, Orbal and JPress. “These valued product names have high marketplace recognition, and many go back nearly 100 years,” added Radke.
Radke said that the integration of USFilter into Siemens had gone very well, with his company targeting double digit growth year over year. He said that international sales have increased by 20% since USFilter became part of Siemens, and that the company continues to grow through acquisition and development of new technologies and service groups. Recent acquisitions, for example, include Monosep, Sernagiotto and the odour control and disinfection lines of Altivia. Recent product introductions from the business include the Cannibal sludge reduction process, municipal water services, as well as a new line of integrated membrane bio-reactors.
FLOWSERVE OPENS NEW QRC IN CALIFORNIA Flowserve Corp has opened a new Flowserve Quick Response Center (QRC) in Orland, California. The QRC is a fully equipped sales and service centre that provides localised customer service, maintenance and repair as well as spare parts inventory. “Flowserve is opening QRCs in strategic areas around the world to provide rapid response and operating cost reduction for our customers,” explained Chuck Walter, Flowserve operations manager in Orland. “This new facility supports our global strategy of moving closer to our customers.” The new 16 000 sq ft facility has a staff of technicians, machinists, welders and fabricators, and specialises in vertical pumps used primarily for agricultural, municipal and general industry applications. The staff will assist in pump and system recommendations, on-site troubleshooting and failure analysis.
The new QRC is twice the size of the old facility, which was located in Chico, California, just a few miles from the new office. The facility provides more space for continued growth and increased efficiency in manufacturing, servicing and repairing pumps up to 20 inches in diameter.
HI LAUNCHES PUMPS SYSTEMS MATTER WEBSITE The Hydraulic Institute (HI) has launched a new website,www.PumpSystemsMatt er.org, devoted to the Pump Systems Matter national educational initiative. Pump Systems Matter aims to lower energy needs in North America while improving the bottom-line profitability of businesses by providing pump users with strategic, broadbased energy management and performance optimisation solutions. The www.PumpSystems Matter.org website provides users with the educational resources needed to get started with optimising pumping systems. Users can also download Pump System Improvement Modeling, a free educational software tool to help evaluate the overall design of complex pumping systems. Additionally, visitors can download case studies, white papers and energy-savings tip sheets to improve bottom line savings and corporate profitability. Guidelines, standards and training resources are also available. The HI believes that the optimisation of pumping

systems represents a significant opportunity for US companies and municipalities to save money and energy. According to the US Department of Energy, pumping systems account for nearly 25% of industrial electrical energy demand and range up to 50% of the energy usage in certain industrial plant operations. Industrial, municipal and many other sectors of the North American economy are energy intensive. Case studies have shown that better system design and more effective pump application can usually save 20% or more in energy costs and represent a large, frequently overlooked savings opportunity. Membership of Pump Systems Matter is open to utilities, market transformation organisations, government agencies, pump users, contractors, consultants, engineering companies, trade and professional associations as well as North American pump manufacturers and suppliers of motors and drives, seals, couplings, bearings, housings, instrumentation and control systems and pump specific software. Interested organisations are invited to contact Pump Systems Matter’s marketing manager Joananne Bachmann at +1 973 267 9700 x 22 or via
