OBJECTIVES In recent years, s t r u c t u r a l optlrnlsatlon h a s become consolidated as a n i m p o r t a n t research field worldwide a n d the results obtained by the researchers are significant, no~ only in the academic context, b u t also from t h e industrial point of view. T h e s p e c t r u m of practical applications is very broad a n d m a n y of the i m p r o v e m e n t s in new designs a n d p e ~ o r m a n c e s have been aclfieved by u~ing s t r u c t u r a l optimisation, in particular, automotive a n d aircraft companies have b e e n applying these ~echniques for severa! years. C o m p u t e r aided design can be e n h a n c e d b y adding optiroisation software a n d the influence of tiffs tool ~o shape engkneering intuition can n o t be over emphaslsed. T h e objective of this conference is to bring together researchers a n d engineers in order to eorm~uNeage recent advances in optirnlsatlon, a n d also to d e m o n s t r a t e how optimisation can be applied in engineering practice. T h e first international eonfe~nce. O P T I 89, was a very successful evem, with m a n y international delegates representing un~versities~ private a n d public researda centres, a n d industriM users of optimisation m e t h o d s .
