A geotextile between subgrade and ballast is proposed as a solution. Field experiences are described. An attempt has been made to develop a testing machine to simulate field conditions and to study the influence of water content, soil texture, and geofabric layers on mud pumping. Publ Bangkok: AIT, 1986 A laboratory test rig for examining reinforced and unreinforced road bases under cyclic and static loading conditions is presented. The hydraulic loading system, load cell and LVDT, and data acquisition/computer system are described. Particular attention is paid to software design and data processing. A well graded crushed limestone base over compacted sand was tested. Reinforcement was high strength, high density polymer grid (Tensor ARl). Publ Rotterdam: A A Balkema, 1987 Laterites are the usual base course material for roads in Kano, Nigeria. The performance of bituminous roads was correlated with the quality of the base laterite. Samples of the subbase were analysed for CBR, particle size distribution and plasticity index, and the extent of water under sealed pavements was determined. Publ Rotterdam: A A Balkema, 1987 An extensive study of volcanic cinder gravels has been undertaken to derive specifications for their use on lightly trafficked roads. Compaction tests were performed on 4 cinder gravels, with and without plastic soil fines and water added. A full scale trial examined the behaviour of 20 different cinder gravels in relation to traffic and climate. The density and moisture content, particle size distribution, subgrade strength, cross section levelling and rutting, compaction, roughness, deflection and cracking were monitored. Recommendations are made based on results.

Publ Rotterdam: A A Balkema, 1987 Experience using calcrete deposits for pavement layer construction is described. Classification and engineering properties of the deposits are outlined, particularly engineering tests, use of cement and lime stabilisation, and the role of calcium carbonate and soluble salts. Existing guidelines for use of calcrete are presented. Four experimental roads were constructed using calcretes ranging from calcified sands to hardpan and boulder deposits as subbases, bases and surface dressing aggregates, and results used to develop appropriate specifications and construction techniques. Recommendations are presented for untreated or lime-modified road bases, cement and lime-stabilised road bases, shoulder materials and surfacing materials.

Laboratory and field tests were carried out to determine strength and deformation properties of individual layers, and mass properties of the foundation rock. Uniaxiai compression tests were used for intact rock, triaxial and direct shear tests on clay seams and weathered rock, and plate load tests in the field. Initial stress was measured by USBM, deformation using overcoring. Laboratory uniaxial compression, free swell and semi-confined time-dependent deformation tests were performed.
