CHICAGO: The ADA Board o f T ru s t­ ees approved an expense bu d g e t of $10,831,900 fo r 1973— vo tin g to rec­ om m end no dues increase— and

to o k a ctio n on a c cre d ita tio n and re s o lu tio n s su b m itte d by c o n s tit­ uent so cie tie s and o th e r dental agencies d u rin g its A u g u st m eeting in th e ADA H eadquarters B u ild in g . The expense bu d g e t was $507,400 above to ta l expenses approved d u rin g 1972, but even to reach that fig u re the trustees had to e lim inate $721,550 o u t of agency requests. A m ong these were: — $150,000 fo r the ADA Health F o undation.

The conference is an annual evaluation of the ten-week summer research program for students sponsored by the . ADA Council on Dental Research and the American Association of Dental Schools. Dr. Blackerby, a native of Kentucky, joined the Foundation in 1945 as director of the division of dentistry, and from 1956 to 1965 he served as associate general director. Dr. Szabo estim ates th a t about 250,000 people in th e United States have e ith e r c le ft lips o r palates, and th a t som e ">00 o r m ore babies are born each year w ith e ith e r defect. He noted th a t c o n sid era b le su c­ cess has been achieved in surgical c o rre c tio n o f the defects, fo llo w ed by lo n g -te rm o rth o d o n tic and pros­ th e tic p ro c e d u re s and a program of speech therapy.
