Fairey Indus trial Ceramic s has announced NSF International certification for its range of Doulton drinking water filters. Fairey is the first manufacturer of ceramic water filter elements to achieve NSF listing. The NSF International certification consi sts of a rigorous independent test programme which includes extended cyclical testing of the material integrity and pressure rat ing of filter housings. The perf ormance of all types of filter el ement are also te sted over extended periods, with quanfifiable contaminant removal ratings listed . The Doulton range consists of both in-li ne and counter top water filters which can be fitted with a variety of ceramic based cartridges. All Doulton cartridges are based on a ceramic microfilter which offers Class 1 particulate and turbidity reduction and enables greater than 99.99% removal of harmful cysts including Cryptosporidium and Giardia. Other benefits such as chlorine and lead reduction are offered in models which incorporate additional water treatment media. Glaze magnetic trap launched Eriez' latest new magnetic separator for the ceramics industry is the Glaze Magnetic Trap. The Glaze Trap uses high intensity, rare earth tube magnets to remove very fine particles of tramp iron, fine iron and stainless steel from the ceramic glaze. The location of the trap is above or near the glaze station just prior to the spraying operation. The ensuing result is a dramatic reduction in the number of rejected products. The improved effective-

ness of the Glaze Trap is a result of the magnetic strength of the tubes and the configuration of the new unit. Material is pumped up through the centre of the Trap which then filters past the tubes due to gravity. The reduced velocity of the feed results in an increase in separation efficiency. The Torit filter cartridge utilises a PTFE membrane to form the outer layer of the cartridge. The membrane consists of thousands of microscopically fine PTFE fibres which resist dust particle on the surface. Water vapour passes through it but dust particles, moist agglomerates and drops of water adhere. The new cartidge design also permits a controlled swelling of the filter cartridge during cleaning by means of compressed air

pulses. This cartridge "motion" helps to detach dust Which has been filtered out. The smooth and inert PTFE membrane with its unusual retention capacity promotes the cleaning process. As a result, the ToritTex cartridges can be easily washed. The waterrepellent PTFE membrane dries so quickly that the filter cartridges can be put into operation immediately. Thanks to the PTFE membrane, the Torit-Tex filter cartridge has an outstanding filtration efficiency of 99.999% per O.51lm particles. In addition to high filtration efficiency in dealing with moist and caked dust, the dust removal units have an unusually long service life due to thorough cleaning of the cartidges.
