Mr. Burrows was born in Manchester in 1901. After receiving his education at private schools he commenced his technical training in 1918 with T. Roland Wollaston, M.I.Mech.E., consulting engineer, where he gained experience in machine drawing and the design of water softeners, gas producers and small powerhouse layouts, his duties including boiler-house tests and feed water and flue gas analyses. During the same period he obtained practical experience in engineering works. From 1927 to 1929 Mr. Burrows was employed by the British Celanese Co. Ltd., Derby, as a draughtsman-designer engaged on the detail design of a variety of chemical plant units, including the preparation of flow sheets and the layout of chemical equipment. Mr. Burrows joined the staff of the Research Department of Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Co. Ltd., Manchester in 1929. There he had the advantage of personal contact with Dr. C. R. Burch who was then developing the first oil condensation pump, which was a consequence of Burch's work on short-path highvacuum distillation. As a result of this association, Mr. Burrows became closely concerned with the design, construction and operation of various kinds of continuously evacuated devices, this work necessitating a number of investigations relating to vhe properties and behaviour of low-vapour pressure fluids, the results of which have been published as papers in various technical journals. Mr. Burrows designed, and is responsible for the operation of the equipment that is used for the production of the "Apiezon" range oflowvapour-pressure oils and greases. In conjunction with a colleague, Mr. Burrows was awarded, by the Institution of Chemical Engineers, the Moulton Medal for 1954 for a paper relating to the process of gas evolution from low-vapour-pressure liquids. He represents the Institution of Chemical Engineers on a Committee of the British Standards Institution that deals with vacuum testing.
