High performance cermets Two grades of cermet cutting tools aimed at drastically improving metal removal rates and surface quality in finish turning and milling of steels and nodular cast iron are new to the British market, says Krupp Widia (UK) Ltd, of High V~combe. The cermets have been widely used in Japan. Cermets are materials based mainly on combinations of titanium carbide, titanium nitride and tantalum nitride. The Krupp Widia TrI and TrI15 grades, first showed at EMO'89, are most effective at high temperatures and therefore operate best at cutting speeds up to 400 or 500 m/ min, well above the range for conventional carbide tooling, claims Krupp. 2"rI is the grade intended for high-speed turning with uninterrupted cuts. the group P10 hardmetal it shows much lower tool wear rates throughout the normal range of cutting speeds and is most effective at speeds up to 500 m/minute. Krupp says it also gives better surface finish than tools made from coated materials. For milling applications and for high feed rate turning with minor interruptions in cutting, TrI15 offers long life at speeds up to 400 m /m i nu t e. In a comparative test on face milling of stainless steel turbine guide vanes with cutting conditions set to give the same number of pieces produced, the hardmetal inserts gave a feed rate of 110 m/minute for a cutting speed of 280 m/minute. Output rate with TrI15 was nearly doubled at 200 m m / minute feed rate with a cutting speed of 400 m/minute.

Quantachrome improves particle size analyser

The UK Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) is calling for papers for a conference to be held on 20-22 October 1992 on the application of new materials technology to the design, research, development and manufacturing of all internal combustion engines (sparkignition, compression-ignition) or gas turbines. The IMechE aims to bring together materials technologists, engine designers and manufacturers.

The Microscan particle size analyser MKII has been further improved, says its manufacturer Quantachrome Corp. The Microscan II's new features include an autorinse cycle, auto-initialization and auto-report generation. Multiple overlays of particle size distributions can be produced on screen, and in printer or plotter reports. IBM compatible software with high resolution colour graphics and pull down windows provides accurate results with minimum operator training.
