important high-performance alternative to existing products, helping to alleviate recent shortages of this particular type of copolymer.

Ciba offers additives in new low-dust forms New low-dust durable (DD) product forms are being introduced by Ciba Speciality Chemicals Additives Division, offering new answers to specific demands of customers. The uniform DD pellet form for antioxidants and compounding ingredients combines low dust content with excellent flow properties and a homogenous mixture. These properties can have positive effects on handling and costs. In comparison with other product forms such as powder or pellets, the DD forms are characterised by better dosing properties, which can lead to higher productivity with lower occurrence of non-type conforming polymer. DD forms allow exact dosing and thus produce a significant reduction in the amounts of additive necessary for optimal stabilising. With the introduction of DD product forms, Ciba’s Additives Division has extended its range of stabilizer systems. At present the antioxidants Irganox 1010 and a few stabilizer blends of antioxidants, process stabilizers and other commonly used co-stabilizers are offered in DD form. They are produced by Ciba’s Additives Division in Kaisten, Switzerland and McIntosh, Alabama, USA. High performance wax lowers compounding temperature A high performance polypropylene copolymer wax has been introduced by AlliedSignal Specialty Chemicals, for use in plastics compounding and glass fibre composites, as well as other areas. It can be processed at a lower temperature and is lighter in colour than other waxes. AlliedSignal Team Leader Robert Doerries claims it represents an 2

Coded A-CX 597, it is the latest of AlliedSignal’s speciality ethylene-propylene maleic anhydride copolymers and is very hard and uniform, with unique viscosity and melting point characteristics. ‘Unique’ pastille form gives advantages to stabilizer A unique form of 2-3mm diameter pastille is now available for the phosphite antioxidant Ultranox 641 from GE Specialty Chemicals. Compared with the traditional powders or pellets, the new pastille form is claimed to give advantages in processing, costefficiency and safety. The shape gives good flow characteristics, with easier handling and feeding, while its dispersion provides a more even polymer mix in processing. Operator safety is improved by removing dust during handling. More accurate dosing is also possible because of the exact size of the pastille. Ultranox 641 is the newest stabilizer product from GE Specialty Chemicals, which is the world’s largest manufacturer of phosphites. It was formulated to provide high-activity performance, excellent hydrolytic stability and high hydrocarbon solubility in polyolefins, PVC, styrenics, polyesters and other engineering polymers.
