Humpty Dumpty Sat in Wall Street夽 Barbara L’Huillier

Humpty Dumpty sat in Wall Street His world had just collapsed The recession has come Like a thief in the night His credit is all gone! Humpty Dumpty sat in Wall Street His heart is made of stone He’d played the game without remorse “The role of business is business” he chanted Not to help mankind! Humpty Dumpty sat in Wall Street He cared not For the poor, the weak, the homeless To increase shareholder value Now that is a worthy goal! Humpty Dumpty sat in Wall Street The world now sees the game he’s played They see his money And his cars How dare they want him to account! Humpty Dumpty sat in Wall Street He begs and begs the President “Won’t you please bail me out? I have so much debt I don’t know what to do”! Humpty Dumpty sat in Wall Street Aghast at what he hears The poor, the weak, the homeless cry “No! No!” to the President “We don’t want Humpty back”!

B. L’Huillier / Critical Perspectives on Accounting 20 (2009) 870–871

Humpty Dumpty sat in Wall Street Listening to the poor’s demands “We want fair wages for our work” “We want fair prices for our crops” “We want a better deal”! Humpty Dumpty sat in Wall Street Sweating over his fate Will the President and his men restore him? Or will they just ignore him? The suspense is hard to bear! Humpty Dumpty sat in Wall Street He’s Saved! He’s Saved! The President and his men Have paid his debts And even written him a cheque! Humpty Dumpty sat in Wall Street His world had been restored He would play the game Without remorse For the role of business IS business!
