PATENTS Canted coil spring with longitudinal component Applicant: Bal Seal Engineering Inc, USA This patent covers a coil spring for use in a cavity, such as in a groove for a pin, housing, or both of these. The cavity also can be part of a seal assembly. The coil spring has a longitudinal component positioned within a number of interconnected coils that run along the spring coil axis in order to increase rigidity of the coil spring. This component applies a load against the coil spring and/or provides restriction against it taking a shape or size that is different to that of the coil-spring retaining groove. The device, system and method described enhance the ability of the canted coil spring to stay or remain within the groove. In some embodiments the spring is retained within the groove by including a longitudinal component within the canted coil spring. This component can be curved and embody different contours, such as annular, square, rectangular and elliptical – to name a few. According to the inventors, this approach overcomes the disadvantage of some coil-spring pin and housing connectors, in which the spring may come out of the retaining groove when subjected to vibration or impact. Self-adjusting non-contact seal Applicant: Advanced Technologies Group Inc, USA This patent provides details of a self-adjusting non-contact seal (130) for sealing a circumferential gap. It comprises at least one shoe (132); a “nozzle” (150), extending from an inner surface of the shoe; projections (144, 146 & 148) extending from the inner surface of the shoe; at least one spring element; and at least one form of secondary seal (48 & 50). The main aim of this invention is to create a non-contact seal for sealing the circumferential gap between a first machine component, such as a stator, and a second machine component, such as a rotor, which has the capability of resetting the radial distance between itself and the rotor (or stator) in the event of inadvertent contact during operation. Two-stage seal for a valve

Patent WO/2014/150825 provides details of a self-adjusting non-contact seal.

Hydraulically controllable mechanical seal Applicant: Georgia Tech Research Corp, USA A controllable mechanical seal for sealing a shaft, which rotates relative to a housing of a device that manipulates a fluid, forms the subject of this patent. The seal described includes a first element that has a first face surface, wherein the element is adapted to rotate with the shaft. A second element, with a second face surface, is adapted to be supported within the housing. The first and second face surfaces define a gap between them – the physical dimensions of which contribute to defining a leakage rate of fluid through the gap. At least one of the first face elements (or the second face elements) includes at least one cavity, wholly contained within the face element. This cavity is adapted to contain a hydraulic fluid. It is also in “fluid communication” with at least one hydraulic intensifier and pressure-control valve. The former is in “pressure communication” with a source of pressure. A sensor is used to generate a signal indicative of the leakage rate, and a controller responds to this signal, generating an output. The state of the pressurecontrol valve is adapted to change in response to the controller output in order to increase or decrease the pressure of the hydraulic fluid in the cavity, thereby deforming the first or second face surface to adjust the leakage rate.

Applicant: Fisher Controls International Llc, USA A two-stage seal, such as a ring seal, for use in a pressurised, process fluid line has been developed. It has a dynamic sealing member and a static sealing member. The former is arranged to continuously engage with a seal surface that slides along the dynamic sealing member. The static sealing member is arranged to engage with the seal surface, in response to an increased process fluid pressure within the line – to increase static seal pressure against the seal surface. The static sealing member is also arranged to release from the seal surface to minimise friction with the seal surface when the process fluid pressure drops and/or in response to movement of the seal surface. The two-stage seal may be used in arrangements requiring both dynamic and static sealing, such as in some process control valves. This patent also covers a process control valve that makes use of the two-stage seal. Patent number: WO/2014/150328 Inventor: M.J. Linser Publication date: 25 September 2014

Pipe-end seal assembly Applicant: Actuant Corp, USA An end seal assembly that is configured to seal a pipe is discussed in this patent. The assembly described may include a cylindrical, finned insert, including an insert portion to be received in the pipe and a base portion, at least partially facing the end face of the pipe. The insert portion has at least one annular fin, extending radially outwards – a pocket being formed between this fin and the base portion. The fin deforms against the inner surface of the pipe. A malleable annular end-seal, positioned near the pocket, is axially compressed between the base portion and the end face of the pipe, and proceeds around the end face to the inner surface of the pipe and into the pocket, in order to inhibit fluid from passing from the inner surface of the pipe to the end face of the pipe.
