A survey carried out by Weir Engineering Services identified potential savings of 13.2 %. A final post refurbishment testing programme revealed that an overall efficiency gain of 16.8 % had been achieved on the nine units, 3.6 % above expectations. Weir believes most of the performance improvement was achieved through the incorporation of its own internal coating, called Weir Protect Coating 010. The Tinwell units were fitted with cast iron impellers, which had suffered serious performance deterioration due to ex-

ing and discharge pipeline were coated with special anticorrosion material. This was to ensure trouble free protection against seawater and improvements in pump efficiency, gained by the enhanced surface finish. Kirloskar Brothers claims high performance with maximum availability, with a reliability factor of 99.99% for the system. The need for a standby has been eliminated, reducing the cost to install the total scheme.

cessive corrosion product buildup and cavitational erosion. The impellers were hydraulically modified to take account of actual site operating conditions. Special blade profiling and preparation was carried out to enable the impellers to be coated to prevent future deterioration. This enabled optimum performance levels to be achieved. Whilst not a general recommendation, coating of the impellers was sanctioned by Weir in view of their physical size, operating conditions and the high cost of material upgrade options. Concrete volute pump technology has been introduced for the first time in India. Kirloskar Brothers Ltd constructed four pumps for the 2 x 250 MW power plant of BSES Limited, on the coastline at Dahanu near Bombay. The sea provides the enormous quantities of cooling water for the station’s cooling system. The four high capacity concrete volute pumps were constructed on site. Together, they are capable of discharging 1 385 000 1 (83 000m3/hr) of water per minute. The draft tube concrete cas-
