remained stable in water and was not detected in air, at any of the temperatures tested. Between pH 5.0 and 10.0, mercury concentrations proportionally decreased in water and increased in air, until they reached an equilibrium state. With organic mercury, the metal was found in air in all the temperatures and pH tested, but only after a 4 h-time lag, and decreased proportionally in water. Mercury contamination of air was higher in acid medium (pH 1.0--5.0) and lower in the range of pH 5.0 to 10.0. In conclusion, air mercury contamination is 30-fold higher with HgCh than with HgCH3Cl at pH 7.2 and 24°C.

hasn't Cr. The gained results of heavy metals show that the living atmosphere on the mountains is not polluted which is seen on the gender of Achillea L from Milevska mountain where Cd and Pb are present in low quantites (2.6; 2.2; 1.08) while in the vally the atmosphere is more polluted which is seen from the Cd in Achillea L from Selicevica (16.00; 14.6). The results show that the amounts of (Fe, Cu, Cr) depending on a kind and place prove that lives in traditional medicine for curing anemia and diabetes.

Blood lead level is an important risk factor of neurobehavioral changes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relation of lead level in blood and neuropsychic changes in Slovak children living in areas differently polluted by lead. The study included population of 9-10 y. old children permanently living in industrial part of country near: metallurgical plant (big city, n = 87; - surrounding n = 88), small town n = 102), children living in relatively clean area, as control group (n = 120). By behavioural test battery was evaluated the level of psychomotor, attention, memory and intelligenceperformance and behaviourof children. Concentration oflead in blood was determined by AAS method. The measured blood lead (PbB) levels in all groups lay under the criterium of PbB levellOO 11g!L (CDC criterium accepted by the WHO, 1991). Based on the PbB level was found: Children living in highly lead polluted area (city-surrounding) with PbB level ::::40 11g!L achieved poor results in all psychological tasks. The levels of lead in blood of children from the observed localities were in a significant interaction with other, mainly social factors, with following lowering of the psychological performance (city-surrounding, over 40 11g!L PbB). The load of body by low-level of lead in interaction with worse psychosocialstatus were risk factors for psychic and somatic development and life quality of children living in highly polluted environment.

Kinds of gender Achillea L are one of the oldest healing plants, which are used in many plant mixtures, beside all for curing anemia and diabetes. The aim of the research is the defining of biogen microelements (Fe, Cr, Cu) for medical use and heavy metals (Ph, Cd) as the indicator of enviroumental cause, in flower five different kinds of Achillea from different places. The investigation AAS method VARIAN 20 was carried on in June in 1997 on fivekinds of Achillea from different places, and the results gained show: different kinds of Achillea L from the same place content nearly the same quantitiesof biogen microelementsand the quantitieson other places are different which is seen on the examples. Achillea linqulata WK, Achillea stricta, Achillea distens from Milevska mountain have Fe (58.8; 59.10; 58.00), Cr (2.60; 2.80; 2.84), while Achillea conpakta, Achillea crithmifolija from Selicevica have Fe (150.0; 15.2) and

Study of influenceof sewage of enterprises of iron ore mining on the backgroundamphibianspecies of steppeDnieperregion-lake frog has shown that influenceon morphophysiological amphibian indices of high concentrations of iron and other accompanying metals is negative and brings about reducing the comparative weight of a liver, kidney, spleen, heart, lungs, i.e. organs activelyparticipating in detoxication, that obviously must be indicativeof the suppression of functions of organs under the influenceof heavy metals. Influence of heavy metals Fe, Mn, Cu, Ni, Zn, Pb and Cd brings about changing a level of carbohydrates, lipids and protein metabolism, that is shown in reducing the quantity of lipids in all tested organs, with the exclusion of gonads and liver, reducing in muscular tissue the quantity of glycogen and increasing its level in the skin, that can be obviously explained by greater energy expenses of the animals. It is observed a reduction of protein in muscles and skin. Changing in lipid metabolism is shown in changing of lipid fractions composition and exactly in reducing of phospholipids and cholesterol in lipids of all investigated organs. Simultaneously increasing of bound amino acid in the liver was found. This is especially striking for glutamic acid which participates in processes xenobioticsdetoxication, as well as cisteine which quantity increases when the organism retires. Under these conditions amphibians are characterized by a reduction of RNA and DNA and increasing of enzymes of microsomal liver fraction - cytochromes b5 and 0-450, that also must promote detoxication function of the liver. Thereby, changing the parameters of metabolism of amphibian organism under the influence of heavy metals must promote the raising of resistance of their organism and promote a survival under conditions of inorganic toxicants impact.

IP4F12S! ANALYSIS OF CHROMOSOMAL ABERRATIONS AND SISTERCHROMATID EXCHANGES IN LEAD EXPOSED POPULATION

K. Rudrama devi *, T. Vani,P.P. Reddy, v.v. Reddy. Governament, Hyderabad, India

Environmental pollution by lead has reached considerable perconceptions as it is increasely used in the petrol additivesand for various industrial purposes such as manufacture of storage batteries, solder manufacture, printing smelting, painting etc. Studies on in vivo human lymphocytesof occupational lead exposed people are scarce. Hence the genetic studies were carried in lead exposed population. In the present investigation, blood samples from 140 people working in the batteries unit in Hyderabad (India) who are occupationally exposed to lead were collected to study the effect of lead on chromosomal damage and sister chromatid exchanges in peripheral lymphocytes. Blood samples from 40 unexposed people were also collected for comparison (Controls). The workers exposed to lead
